NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Fear has been the major obstacle in our loving relationship with God
and with one another. St. John wrote in h is first letter: “There is no
fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear.” Contemporary psychology
confirms John’s teaching that fear, not hate, is the real enemy of love.
People fear love because it requires them to be open and vulnerable to the
beloved. It demands a passion and a commitment. This makes many people
nervous, whereas joyful abandonment is to be preferred to the cautious,
timid commitment of ourselves to God and others. To his followers Jesus
says, “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is
pleased to give you the kingdom.”
