FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
Creation, fall, redemption: as Lent begins, the readings go back to the
beginnings with these great themes of the story of the people of God for
us to enter into once again. Both Genesis and 1 Timothy talk about the
beginning of sin, its profound effect on human life, and its remedy. Sin,
unleashed by Adam and Eve, forced them into a desert of sorts, a place of
alienation, trial, shame and guilt, and of death.
It is also in the desert, however, that salvation comes to the “flesh” –
not the body but human weakness unredeemed. Jesus is there to face down
another tempter and lead God’s people out of self-interest and
disobedience.

Then the devil took him up to a very high
mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their
magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you
will prostrate yourself and worship me." At this, Jesus said to him, "Get
away

COMING HOME TO GOD’S
MERCY
Archbishop Donald Wuerl has
written a pastoral letter to the clergy, religious and laity of the
Archdiocese, urging the faithful to go to confession during Lent.
Also, as in the previous
year, on Wednesday evenings, beginning with the first week of Lent,
February 13, 2008, until the Wednesday of the Holy Week, a priest will be
available for confessions in every church throughout the archdiocese from
6:00.PM to 8:00 PM.
The importance for us of the
sacrament of penance, stated Archbishop Wuerl, is that it really does
restore and renew our baptismal holiness. A Catholic who has committed
grave sin is obliged to ask forgiveness for it in this sacrament. Once we
do and receive sacramental absolution, we are restored again to holiness –
to an innocence before God. So powerful is the grace of this sacrament
that the Rite of Penance reminds us that “frequent and careful celebration
of this sacrament is also very helpful as a remedy for venial sins. This
is not a mere ritual repetition or psychological exercise, but a serious
striving to perfect the grace of baptism so that, as we bear in our body
the death of Jesus Christ, his life may be seen in us ever more clearly.
Sometimes confession is
called the sacrament of conversion, because it “makes sacramentally
present Jesus’ call to conversion.” While the self-disclosure of one’s
sins to a priest can be difficult, it can also be profoundly liberating as
we acknowledge our sins and as we resolve out loud to avoid them, through
grace, in the future. Confession does take courage, but what an
extraordinary reward!
To help those preparing to
go to confession this Lent or anytime, a step-by-step guide to the
sacrament, along with a number of other resources are available at
www.the-light-is-on.org “My hope is that this Lent,” wrote Archbishop
Wuerl, “with the ready availability of the sacrament of confession, will
truly be a time of blessings for all of us knowing that the grace and
healing of Christ’s redemptive death is so generously available to us and
that we have had both the courage and the good sense to avail ourselves of
this wondrous grace – forgiveness.”
