PENTECOST SUNDAY

Pentecost is primarily a feast celebrating the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Holy Spirit is at the heart of our transformation through baptism, where we receive the Spirit. After the disciples experienced Pentecost, the anointing of the Holy Spirit, they go forth with boldness to proclaim the Good News of Jesus’ resurrection and the fullness of Emmanuel, God With Us.
The other part of Pentecost is the sending out of the disciples to be witnesses and testify to all nations. In the same way, we who have been filled with the Easter joy are sent out today to witness with our lives. We are commissioned to be lights of the world. Let us pray to live with the boldness given to the disciples on Pentecost, knowing that the Spirit is ours.

PENTECOSTE

THE CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION

The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports Catholic Church organizations that carry out international relief and solidarity efforts. Programs include relief and resettlement for victims of persecution, war, and natural disasters; development projects to improve living conditions for the poor; legal and support services for poor immigrants; peace and reconciliation work for people suffering from violence; and advocacy on behalf of the powerless.

For millions of people survival depends on the abundance of their crops. Catholic Relief Services’ agricultural programs bring new techniques and practices to farming communities in 34 countries.

One of the tragic consequences of the Iraq war is the plight of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees – mostly women and children – who have been forced from their homes to seek safe haven in neighboring Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. In July 2007, Catholic Relief Services and Migration and Refugee Services organized a joint fact-finding mission to these regions to assess the situation and to offer the Catholic Church’s assistance. Because of their sobering experience, the delegates also advocated for the refugees with the U.S. State Department and Congress.

This Collection enabled Catholic Relief Services to help thousands of subsistence farmers to obtain seeds and training in farming techniques so that they can support their families. Migration and Refugee Services and Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc., provided essential services to thousands of refugee families and immigrants. The advocacy work of the Department of Justice, Peace, and Human Development of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and CRS led to U.S. legislation that supports fledgling democratic reforms in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by providing much-needed financial aid.

These are just a few examples of how your support for the Catholic Relief Services Collection is making a real difference in the lives of the poor here at home and around the world.

EASTER DUTY: The second precept of the Church (“You shall confess your sins at least once a year”) ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness.
The third precept of the Church (“You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy Communion at least during the Easter season”) guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feast, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy. The Easter season ends with the conclusion of Vespers on Pentecost Sunday, May 11, 2008.
