BAPTISM OF THE LORD
In today’ Gospel we heard God say, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am
well pleased.”
Since our baptism identifies us with Jesus, these words are meant to be
applied to each one of us as well. As a result of our baptism God calls us
his beloved daughters and sons, with whom he is well pleased. The
anointing at baptism made us sharers in the prophetic role of Jesus.
Consequently, we are a priestly people, we are a royal people, we are a
people called to be prophets.
riserve e privilegi.

After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and
behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the
heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." -
Mt 3:16-17

LOOKING AHEAD
In the ongoing struggle over
liturgical reform in the Catholic Church, all interested Catholics could
greatly benefit by reading Archbishop Piero Marini’s new book, A
Challenging Reform: Realizing the Vision of the Liturgical Renewal
(Liturgical Press, 2007. $15.95).
Those Catholics who have tried to take the Church back to the world of
Trent exhibit a certain nostalgia of the past. But the Lord is in front of
us, not behind us. The movement launched by the ecumenical Council to
reform the Liturgy is irreversible, because its supporting principles are
perennial. “They aren’t principles bound to a certain historical period.
The priesthood of the faithful, the primacy of Scripture, the return to
the church of the Fathers, the possibility of adaptation in language and
the other elements of the rites are permanently valid.”
The Liturgy is itself “the primordial source of renewal in the church. The
more we succeed at celebrating the Liturgy, the more we’ll live the
Christian life fully and the more we’ll succeed in transforming the
church.”
Archbishop Marini, who served as the papal master of ceremonies for 20
years, from 1987 to 2007, stated: “The great ideals of the church are in
crisis today in part because there’s a crisis in the liturgy. The great
ideals of ecumenism, of internal reform of the church, of dialogue with
the world, are all connected. The Council wanted to confront these
challenges beginning with the liturgy. If the liturgy is the source and
summit of our life, then we foster in the liturgy the kind of life we need
to meet these great goals.”
