ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Christ’s words in today’s Gospel, “Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel,” remind us that God’s salvation came from the Israelites and went out to them first. “The Jews first and also the Greek,” St. Paul wrote in Romans 2:10. But Paul, and eventually Matthew, had something else to say. To the Jews and then the Gentiles talked not only about origin but also destination. God’s glory shows no partiality, Paul said. It goes out to all.

And so, it turns out, does it go in Matthew’s gospel as well. From “go nowhere among the Gentiles” in Matthew 9 we get to another “go” in the risen Christ’s words to his disciples in Matthew 28:19: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” God’s desire is to make all people God’s people.

SA29-08

At the sight of the crowds, Jesus' heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest." - Mt 9:36-38

THE LEGACY OF THE POPE’S VISIT TO THE U.S.

In his six day visit to the U.S., Pope Benedict XVI has been a source of renewal and hope for the Catholic Church in the U.S. In the past two hundred years the Catholic Church in the U.S., the Pope reminded us, experienced an impressive growth and was strengthened by “towering figures” such as St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and many other holy men and women. On these solid foundations, the Pope told us, the future of the Church in America must, even now, begin to rise.

The Pope recommended various action steps that will enable us to contribute to the renewal of our church and our nation:

• Make Education a Priority: comprehensive and sound instruction in the truths of the faith for children, youth, and adults must be “maintained and expanded.”
• Live Our Faith Every Day: Faith must permeate every aspect of our lives every day.
• Defend the Weakest among You: We must care for the poor, the sick, the unborn and abused children and welcome immigrants.
• Seek Unity: We need to move beyond sterile divisions and listen together to the voice of the Spirit guiding the Church into a future of hope.
• Make Christ the Center of Our Lives: The Church’s mission is to introduce people to Christ’s transforming love and truth; to communicate the joy born of faith and the experience of God’s love.

BLESSED FATHER’S DAY! To all fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and to all those involved in parenting, teaching and guidance in any way that helps the next generation to grow into the image of Christ, we wish God’s abundant blessings.
