PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION
Today’s Gospel contains St. Matthew’s Passion narrative, which shows a
potent contrast: Jesus submits to his death, but he is also the master of
his fate. Today’s other two readings from Isaiah and Philippians highlight
this paradox. The path to glory leads through sacrifice and sometimes
suffering. Knowing this fact should not deter us but encourage us to
embrace it, because we know God has gone first and stands ready to lead us
through.
We need, therefore, to ask ourselves how we can enter more fully into what
happens at the end of this week: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy
Saturday. Can we be present for some of our Holy Week services
commemorating what Jesus has done for us? More than a duty, it is our
privilege to participate, even in this busy world, in the passion, the
death, and the glory of Jesus.

Le letture di questa domenica mostrano un forte contrasto: Gesù si
sottomette alla morte ma è anche il padrone del suo destino. La strada
alla gloria passa attraverso il sacrifico e spesso la sofferenza. Siamo
ora incoraggiati ad abbracciarla, perchè sappiamo che Dio è passato per
primo ed è sempre pronto a guidarci.
Più che un dovere, è quindi un privilegio partecipare ai servizi religiosi
della Settimana Santa che commemorano ciò che Jesù ha afatto per noi.

HOW TO CELEBRATE HOLY
WEEK
Palm Sunday marks the
beginning of the holiest week of the liturgical year. During the weeks of
Lent, we have prepared for this final week by fasting, praying and
almsgiving, all with the purpose of opening ourselves more fully to God’s
presence in our lives.
The Holy week begins with Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, commemorated on
Palm Sunday. The Gospel reading for Monday of the Holy Week is the
Anointing at Bethany. In this final week of Lent we should redouble our
efforts and share more of the gifts we’ve been given with those in need.
On Tuesday, the Gospel reading is John’s account of Jesus announcing at
the last supper that one of the disciples is about to betray him. How have
we betrayed the Lord? Celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation is an
important part of our preparation. On Wednesday, the Gospel recounts
Jesus’ instructions on the need of the disciples to prepare a place for
the Last Supper. Are we preparing a “room” in our lives?
The liturgies from the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday through
the evening of Easter Sunday are referred to as the “Triduum,” meaning
three days. These are the days in which we are given the opportunity to
share in the mystery and power of the Father’s love as lived out in the
suffering of Jesus, his Son. It is perhaps most helpful to think of these
days, not as separate celebrations, but as one continuous remembrance in
which we meet and follow Jesus.
The day we’ve been waiting and preparing for during Lent and Holy Week is
Easter Sunday. As we have committed to strip our lives of whatever keeps
us from God, now we can see clearly who Jesus really is and what he comes
to give us. As we have faced the suffering, we now share in the joy. It is
a joy that we will continue to celebrate during the next fifty days – the
time between now and Pentecost – called the “Easter Season.”

ON GOOD FRIDAY our parish will take up the annual Good Friday
Collection for the Holy Land. Your financial contribution helps to
support the struggling Christian community in the Middle East and to
protect Christianity’s holiest places. Please be generous!
OUR SINCERE THANKS to all those who worked hard to make our
annual Lasagna Dinner, Bake Sale & Bazaar 2008 a huge success. Special
thanks to the members of the Sodality, their husbands and friends, as
well as to the many young people whose service was very much loved and
appreciated.
FRIDAY IS A DAY OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE. To commemorate the
passion and death of Jesus on Good Friday, all Catholics who have
reached their 14th year are bound to abstain from meat. Catholics
between the ages of 18 and 59 are limited to one full meal and less food
at the other two meals. No solid foods are allowed between meals.
WE ARE ACCEPTING FLOWER DONATIONS for the Repository on Holy
Thursday and for the main Altar on Easter Sunday. Each lily flower pot
costs $20. Please, use the appropriate envelopes marked “Easter
Flowers,” which are inserted in today’s bulletin or found at the church
entrance. Flowers can be offered in memory of a loved one or as an
outright donation.
PLEASE RESPOND TO THE EASTER MAILING recently sent out to all our
parishioners and friends by using the enclosed envelope for your Easter
offering to your Church. The parish depends heavily on this collection
to meet its year-round expenses. Thank you!
THE ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL CONTINUES: All families of the parish are
encouraged to respond to the Appeal. Contributions and pledges can be
sent directly to Archbishop Wuerl any time using forms and
self-addressed envelopes located at the Church entrance. With each
family answering the Appeal, our Parish can easily reach our 2008 goal
of $12,861. Thank you!

I fiori possono essere offerti in memoria dei nostri defunti.
FAVORITE RISPONDERE ALLA LETTERA DI PASQUA spedita recentemente a
tutti i nostri parrocchiani e amici, usando l’apposita busta per la
vostra offerta di Pasqua. La parrocchia conta molto su questa colletta
per pagare le spese di tutto l’anno.
L'APPELLO DELL'ARCIVESCOVO CONTINUA: Tutte le famiglie della
parrocchia sono pregate di rispondere all’Appello. Offerte possono
essere mandate direttamente all’Arcivescovo Wuerl qualsiasi tempo usando
le forme e le buste che si trovano all’entrata della Chiesa. Se ogni
famiglia risponde all’Appello, sarà facile raggiungere la quota di
