TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In his encounter with the Canaanite woman, Jesus uses harsh words. This is explained by the simple fact that Jesus was a Jew and the woman was a Gentile. Culturally, they were supposed to have little in common. But by granting her request, Jesus confirmed an important truth: He came into our world to save both the Jews and the Gentiles. Truly, God wanted to have mercy on all people in the Son, Jesus Christ.
 

VENTESIMA DOMENICA DEL TEMPO ORDINARIO
Nel suo incontro con la donna cananea Gesù usa parole dure. Questo si spiega dal semplice fatto che Gesù è ebreo e la donna è pagana. Non c’è nulla in comune nella loro cultura. Ma rispondendo alla richiesta di guarire la figlia della donna cananea, Gesù conferma una realtà importante: Egli venne in questo mondo per salvare gli ebrei e i pagani. Dio volle mostrare la sua misercodia a tutti i popoli nel Suo Figlio, Gesù Cristo.

 

He said in reply, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters." Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour. -Mt 15:26-28

INDIVIDUAL CATHOLICS AND PUBLIC POLICY

The literary dissident Alexander Solzhenitzyn, who died recently, once wrote that ordinary individuals have a responsibility to “not participate” in lies, but it is “within the power of writers and artists to do much more: to defeat the lie!” The Gospel calls Catholics to social justice. All Catholics have the responsibility to bring social justice issues to the attention of the public.

Catholics must confront the dilemma which is at times caused by the conflict between personal conviction and public policy. Here the central question is not whether the deepest convictions of judges, attorneys or government officials should influence their individual public decisions; rather, the basic question is how the two should be related. Consequently, the next question is how imperfect laws should be changed. Moral analysis in the public policy debate is necessary in view of the character of the issues we all face nowadays. In fact, the major issues of our time are fundamental questions whose moral dimension is a pervasive and persistent factor. Hence, to ignore the moral dimension of public policy is to forsake the constitutional heritage of the United States, itself a bearer of moral values.

Moreover, the purpose of the separation of Church and State is not to exclude the voice of religion from the public debate. On the contrary, it is meant to provide a context for religious freedom where the insights of each religious tradition can be set forth and tested. Developing and implementing a moral vision for the United States is a task for all citizens, and it is through the force and influence of public opinion that the citizens make their own voices heard.

Public opinion, however, is not always wise, nor is it well-formed politically or ethically. Therefore, the task of trying to shape a well-formed public opinion is central to the role of the Church in public affairs, because the Church must never be separate from society, even if it is separate from the State.

THE SAINT GABRIEL SOCIETY will celebrate its annual feast on Sunday, August 31, 2008, at the 9:00 AM Mass, followed by a continental breakfast in Casa Italiana for everyone present. Please, join us as we honor St. Gabriel, our youthful miracle worker.

DURING YOUR SUMMER VACATION don’t take a vacation from your Church obligations. The Sunday Masses Schedule remains the same for the summer. Also, even if you are away on vacation, your weekly offering envelopes are much needed and appreciated.

2008 ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL: The Archbishop’s Appeal is readily making progress toward achieving the goal for the 2008 campaign. The goal for our parish is $12,861. As of July 31, 2008, $17,610 has been received in pledges from our parish. As of July 31, 2008, the total amount received is $12,645. Thank you to every donor here at Holy Rosary Church who has made a gift to the 2008 Archbishop’s Appeal. A letter will be mailed during Sept. to previous donors. Thank you for your generous response.

LA SECONDA COLLETTA OGGI è per la Campagna delle Comunicazioni Cattoliche, che provvedono aiuto a portare il messaggio del Vangelo nelle case non solo della nostra comunità ma anche della nazione.
