SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
Today’s epistle speaks of bearing the hardships of the gospel, which one can do only “with the strength that comes from God.” For their part, the apostles on the mountain of Transfiguration, bowed down in fear, need the encouraging words of Jesus to “rise, and do not be afraid.”

Trust in God, of which the psalm sings – not only trust in self – is the key to entering into the chosenness to which God invites us, both as individuals and as a people.

Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."

WHO IS THE POPE?

The forthcoming visit to Washington, DC, in mid-April (15-17) of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI should provide an understanding of the papacy, the oldest continuing institution in the world.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth to share the Good News of God’s love and save humanity from sin and death through his death and resurrection. He sent his apostles to continue his mission: to witness to the truth of what he taught and to bring all people into relationship with him through baptism. St. Peter was charged by Jesus himself to be the head of the apostles – i.e., the first pope. St. Peter was martyred around AD 67, so from early on, the bishop of Rome was understood to be the successor of St. Peter in particular and a special sign of unity and leadership among all the other bishops. Two hundred sixty-five men have held the office in an unbroken line of succession. In the present day, over one billion souls are under its care.

Many people misunderstand the responsibilities of a pope, thinking that he is a figure who unilaterally dictates what Catholics must do and believe. This is not so. Our faith is a gift from Christ through the apostles. The pope functions as the head of the bishops, to work in unity with them to teach, lead, and sanctify – to safeguard what has been handed down, not to invent new ideas.

Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl will speak on “The Role of Peter in the Church Today.”

This free Lenten lecture will be Sunday, March 9, 2008, 3:00 p.m. at the Church of the Little Flower, 5607 Massachusetts Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20816. Ample free parking. For more information, call 301-3204538.
