NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Today’s Gospel gives us the ending of the Sermon on the Mount. There we
find the secret, the key to understanding and appreciating Jesus’
preaching. Jesus says, “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and
acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.” Jesus
remains demanding when he insists that it is not enough to hear what he
says. Rather it is a matter of doing what he says, of acting on his words,
of putting his preaching into practice.
It is so easy to let Jesus’ words go in one ear and out the other. But to
be his true disciples, we must let Jesus’ words sink into our heads,
hands, and hearts.

"Everyone
who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise
man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the
winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been
set solidly on rock." - Mt 7:24-25

BLESSED JOHN BAPTIST
SCALABRINI
June 1st – 103rd Anniversary of the Death of
Since 1960, Holy Rosary
Church has been staffed by the Missionaries of St. Charles, a religious
Congregation founded in 1887 by Bishop John Baptist Scalabrini. Now
known as Scalabrinians, they care for the religious and social concerns
of immigrants. Eight years later, Bishop Scalabrini founded the
Missionary Sisters of St. Charles and he was instrumental in having the
Sisters Apostles of the Sacred Heart care for immigrants. He also
convinced St. Frances Xavier Cabrini to come to America in 1889 to care
for Italian immigrants.
Few bishops can match the work done by Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini.
He was called the Apostle of the Catechism, as well as being “apostle”
of millions of immigrants. At his beatification in St. Peter’s Square on
November 9, 1997, Pope John Paul II said that Blessed John Baptist
Scalabrini intensely lived the paschal mystery by “serving the poor and
crucified Christ in the many needy and suffering people whom he loved.”
Bishop Scalabrini did many good things: he organized centers of mutual
aid; developed networks; and saved from isolation hundred of thousands
of Italians scattered around the globe. For these reasons, and for being
a man of God, the Church declared him blessed. “But it is also true,”
wrote Furio Colombo in La Repubblica, “that Scalabrini has been the
first (and for decades the only) European intellectual to understand and
define the phenomenon of migration, to grasp its revolutionary meaning
from a historical and social point of view. He realized he had on hand
the revelation of the future, even the political one, of the world.”
What distinguishes Scalabrini among the saints is that he goes beyond
charity and human solidarity. For him, to understand is as important as
to act. “The fact is that in him there are two lives closely
intertwined: the pastor and the intellectual, perhaps the first great
sociologist of migration.”

JUNE IS THE MONTH OF
THE SACRED HEART
The devotion of the Sacred Heart of
Jesus that was propagated by St. John Eudes (1601-80) and received new
impetus from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-90), chose the heart as a
symbol of the overflowing love and mercy of God f or all people,
especially sinners – a point that had been obscured not only by the
widespread secularism of the day, but also by the prevailing influence
of Jansenism, a spiritual movement that exaggerated human sinfulness and
unworthiness.
We participate in Jesus Christ’s
redemptive love for each one of us especially by attending Mass and
receiving Holy Communion. “Do this in memory of Me.” The command of
Jesus to repeat his actions and words “until he comes” urges us to be
faithful to our Eucharistic celebration on Sunday but also as often as
we can during the week, particularly during the month of June.
“Participation in the Holy Sacrifice identifies us with his Heart,
sustains our strength along the pilgrimage of this life, makes us long
for eternal life, and unites us even now to the Church in heaven, the
Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints.”
