FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Today’s first reading shows the Church in its very first months of existence facing a crisis of power and fairness in the distribution of food and other goods among the Christian community of Jews and Hellenists -- a crisis resolved with the selection of seven deacons to handle the matter.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples on the very verge of his arrest and execution, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God; have faith in me.” So let us always pray for the weak in our midst, trusting in the Lord and striving for faithfulness in all things.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am, you also may be." - Jn 14:1-3

RETHINKING ADULT FAITH FORMATION

At Holy Rosary Church we have begun an Adult Faith Formation Class. It is held every last Sunday of the month in the Lower Church Hall from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and conducted by the Rev. Francis V. Tiso, Ph.D., Associate Director, Secretariat for Ecumenical and Inter-religious Affairs, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The topic presently analyzed is the Encyclical Letter “Spe Salvi” (on Christina Hope) of Pope Benedict XVI. For further information, interested adults can contact the class coordinator, Mrs. Ann Marie Leali at (703)971-7599 or amleali2000@hotmail.com.

If adult faith formation is broken, stated writer Tom Zanzig, let us fix it. We have begun this class in response to a felt need of the community. It aims to discovering what God is already and uniquely doing in our community and then equips parishioners with the resources to respond. The 1999 bishops’ document, “Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us” is in many respects a beautiful document with a holistic understanding of adult faith formation. But we are often told that the Rite of Christina Initiation of Adults is the model of how we should be doing all catechesis. We have such a narrow idea of what adult formation looks like that even when we try to approach it in a new way we consistently fall back into the adult education course model. We keep getting stuck.

We have to change our paradigm. We think the key to nurturing Catholic identity is to teach people more content. But research suggests knowledge is secondary, not primary, to why people connect to a community and embrace its mission. We don’t form adults by just telling them what they should believe or do. We have to nurture their spiritual lives.

Instead of focusing on what’s wrong within our parish, we shift the focus to what’s life-giving, to things in the parish that work well and build on those.

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH Alessandra Lorraine Crowe and Silvio William Crowe , children of Eric William and Anne-Marie (De Paoli Twohie) Crowe, who were baptized in our Church on April 13, 2008.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSION COLLECTION: Next Sunday, April 27, 2008, a second collection is taken up in the Archdiocese of Washington to help our fellow Catholics in rural America. These poor dioceses need financial assistance to support parishes, evangelization, religious education, seminary training, ethnic ministry and youth programs. We need to protect and preserve our Catholic community here in the United States by responding generously to this appeal.
