TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Church, which Jesus founded on the “rock” of Peter, is not a “perfect” society -- “unequal and hierarchical” – but a communion of believers in the love of God.

The considerable attention that Jesus gives to the training of disciples makes clear that he does not want passive disciples. St. Paul, using the metaphor of the body, emphasizes that every member has a part to play in the life of the Body of Christ. Dead members do not contribute to the proper functioning of the Body but in fact are a burden and a hindrance to it.

As we celebrate this Eucharist today we declare ourselves united to Jesus and to each other in making God’s love a reality in the world around us.

"I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. - Mt 16:19-20

SIGNS OF LIFE IN THE CHURCH AND SOCIETY

The Catholic Church is still far from being the communion of believers engaged in making God’s love a reality in the world around us. Still, writes Father Andrew Greely in Commonweal (8/15/08), there are signs of the times suggesting enormous vitality in Catholicism and giving grounds for hope.

• There are a lot more Catholics in the United States than anyone has been able to count, perhaps 15 million more than current estimates. Latinos are a new source of energy in Catholicism and bring a dimension of joy.
• The identity of American Catholics is rooted in the Catholic imaginative and narrative tradition. The Resurrection, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, God in the Sacraments, concern for the poor, and Mary the mother of Jesus are essential components of their heritage for about a thousand years.
• In the forty years since Humanae vitae, the birth-control encyclical, Catholics have learned to be Catholic on their own terms and remain in the Church.
• Volunteer movements, strong among Catholics, touch on the essence of Catholicism: serving the least of one’s brothers and sisters. There are scores of parishioners eager to assume responsibility for needed activities: ushers, lectors, cantors, CCD teachers, sport ministers, parish and financial council members, school-board members, and parish trustees.
• Popular devotions, some scorned by liturgists, remain strong. Devotions are not superstitious. They remystify the world through the insight that grace is everywhere.
• Friendship networks among Catholics are strong manifestations of Catholic community. Many fallen-away Catholics are merely waiting for invitations to return.

In his new book, The Way We’ll Be, pollster John Zogby writes that his surveying shows that we are in the middle of a fundamental reorientation on the American character, away from wanton consumption and toward a new global citizenry in an age of limited resources. Americans, states Zogby, want to live in a world with other people, not in a walled empire surrounded by enemies.
