SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
Jesus explains to his listeners that his Bread of Life is “not the bead
your ancestors ate,” referring to the manna that nourished hungry Jews
during their long trek from captivity to the Promised Land. Our entire
life is also a long trek from captivity to the Promised Land. We struggle
with all sorts of toils, temptations, and snares, but we do well not to
lose sight of the life-giving bread that nourishes us. The path we trod,
however difficult, Jesus walked first. And he left a portion of himself at
every twist and turn, to nourish, refresh, and encourage us.
SS.

"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my
blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I
have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have
life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike
your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live
forever." - Jn 6:56-58

THE EXPERIENCE OF
FAITH
According to Cardinal
Carlo M. Martini, the retired Bishop of Milan, the challenge of teaching
and handing on the faith in our postmodern world can be met by
cultivating the following four attitudes:
• Do not be surprised by diversity: Listen without immediately judging
the speaker in order to distinguish what is really true from what only
appears true.
• Take risks: Everything has to be given up for Christ and his Gospel.
• Befriend the poor: Put the poor at the center of your life because
they are the friends of Jesus.
• Nourish yourself with the Gospel: Jesus is the only bread of life.
To develop these four attitudes, Cardinal Martini proposes four
exercises:
• Reading the Bible: Listening to the Word of God challenges us, gives
shape to our existence and nourishes our apostolic creativity.
• Self-mastery: The frank opposition to desires is more joyful than
endless concessions to everything that seems desirable but ends in
boredom.
• Silence: We need to move away from an unhealthy slavery to rumors and
endless chattering, from characterless music that only makes noise, and
find each day at least one half-hour of silence and a half-day each week
to think about ourselves, to reflect and pray for a longer period.
• Humility: Leave room for the Holy Spirit, who works better than we do
and more deeply in solving the big problems of our times. Do not wish to
stifle the Spirit in others but be sensitive to its most subtle
manifestations and for that you need silence.

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH
Andrew George Callas, son of George Andrew and Tania (Colavita) Callas,
who was baptized in our Church on May 18, 2008.
THE SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY is for the Renovation Fund. The
projects for this year are making handicapped-assessable restroom
facilities in Casa Italiana, enlarge its kitchen, and restoring the
Lower Church Hall.
MEMORIAL DAY: On Monday, May 26th, we remember all who have
served in the Armed Forces of our country. Their sacrifice has set a
standard for duty, love and service. Through the gift of their lives,
these great ideals are no longer words. They are the price of freedom.
We pray that God rewards them in heaven as they live in our hearts. It
is a national holiday. The parish and school offices are closed. There
will be no noonday Mass.
FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA ITALIANA – Next Sunday, June 1, 2008,
everyone is invited to the 10:30 Mass celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio
to the U.S.A., Archbishop Pietro Sambi, to commemorate Italy’s National
Day. The Italian Ambassador together with the diplomatic corps are
expected to attend. Refreshments will be served in Casa Italiana after
the Mass.
THE PARISH COUNCIL will meet on Monday, June 2, 2008, at 7:00 PM
in the Lower Church Hall to review the past year and finalize the
calendar of events for the new fiscal year. All members are urged to
attend.
2008 ANNUAL JUBILARIAN MASS – The annual Jubilarian Celebration
of marriage honoring couples married 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 50+
years will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass,
followed by an anniversary cake and wine in Casa Italiana. Please call
the parish office with the names of the jubilarians and their respective
