SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Amidst Easter joy and confidence, the readings this week seem to sound a soft note of insecurity, or at least caution, and ask us some important questions. Are we aware enough of being open to outcasts? Do we see that what we believe needs to be expressed in our conduct? Do we turn to God who is really present among us?

"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you." - Jn 14:15-17

IN DEFENCE OF IMMIGRANTS

Presidential candidates early in the campaign inflamed anti-immigrant sentiment in the country and lately have lowered the volume on the immigration issue.

In his historic visit to the United States, Pope Benedict XVI spoke of protecting immigrant families, not dividing them. It was shocking that on the same day that Pope Benedict XVI and President Bush affirmed in a joint statement the need for a policy that treats immigrants humanely and protects their families, federal agents were conducting raids at plants in five states belonging to Pilgrim’s Pride, a major poultry processing company. They arrested more than 300 immigrants accused of being illegal workers. Many of the persons arrested were Catholic.

Contrary to the shallow opinions of a Representative from Colorado still deep in the bigotry of ages past, the Church is not engaged in faith-based marketing to recruit new members when it defends immigrants. The Church believes that as a community we have a duty to respond to the immigrants’ needs, regardless of race, nationality or legal status. It stresses the fact that immigration reform is a continuing issue in the United States and around the world. The failure of a comprehensive immigration reform cannot be remedied by immigration raids. In these immigration raids and deportations illegal immigrant parents are separated from spouses and children who are United States citizens or legal immigrants. The separation of families, Pope Benedict XVI told reporters, “is truly dangerous for the social, moral and human fabric” of Latin and Central American families. The fundamental solution is that there should not longer be a need to emigrate, that there are enough jobs in the homeland, a sufficient social fabric.” Until such solution is reached, Pope Benedict XVI encourages churches and their communities “to continue to welcome immigrants who join your ranks today, to share their joys and hopes, to support them in their sorrows and trials, and to help them flourish in their new home.”
