SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus told his followers who walked the roads with him, and continues to tell us that we are treasure-seekers. Throughout our lives we are seeking and finding a great treasure: the Kingdom of God, the reign of God in our midst. It is not a treasure of gold, or an expansive pearl, but God’s plan for this world. Seeking and finding God with other people in the community that we call the Church is the baptismal treasure that we have in common.

Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli che camminavano con lui, e continua a dire a noi che siamo ricercatori di tesori. Durante la nostra vita noi cerchiamo e troviamo un grande tesoro: il regno di Dio, il Regno di Dio in mezzo a noi. Non è un tesoro di oro e neppure una perla preziosa, ma il piano di Dio per questo mondo. Cercare e trovare Dio con le altre persone nella comunità che chiamiamo la Chiesa è il tesoro battesimale che abbiamo in comune.

ROLE OF DOUBT IN RELIGION

The conditions of religious belief have changed for modern Westerns. “Belief in God isn’t quite the same thing in 1500 and today,” writes Charles Taylor in “A Secular Age” (Harvard University Press, 20070).

Religious faith was once the air everyone, even the doubter, breathed, writes Peter Steinfeld. Today, religious faith, in its many forms stands as but one possibility alongside a range of non-religious outlooks that the honest believer cannot simply dismiss as deluded or depraved. Far more than in the past, believers must live their faith in a condition of doubt and uncertainty. Of course, uncertainty and faith are not the polar opposites often supposed. Indifference, and not doubt, is the greater adversary of faith. Absolute certitude about God often reflects a dangerous arrogance.

Is such a doubt-haunted belief merely the intermediate stage in that slow retreat of the “Sea of Faith” that Matthew Arnold lamented in “Dover Beach,” and that has left much of Western Europe with little more than a veneer of cultural religiosity?

Or is there a newly emergent faith that is deep and constant, marked by familiar forms of prayer and practice, but nonetheless alert to, perhaps even enlivened by, the whisper saying, “I am convinced I’m right but I could be wrong?”

So what exactly does it mean that many contemporary believers will be living their faith “in a condition of doubt and uncertainty”? More research is needed.

On the other hand, we should all heed Pope Benedict XVI’s warning at the Australian World Youth Day: “In so many of our societies, side by side with material prosperity, a spiritual desert is spreading: an interior emptiness, an unnamed fear, a quiet sense of despair.” The Pope urged young people to create “a new age in which hope liberates us from the shallowness, apathy and self-absorption which deaden our souls and poison our relationships.”
