EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The focus of today’s readings is on food. A survey of Matthew’s gospel
reveals ninety-four instances of food imagery.
Jesus understood his responsibility to feed the famished folks who had
followed him. The mention of blessing, breaking, and giving previews the
Last Supper. At this Eucharistic celebration we are here to do what Jesus
did. There still are so many hungry people. There is still enough food to
feed them as long as we share our food instead of waste it or hoard it. We
can still do what Jesus commands us to do: “Give them some food
yourselves.”

But they said to him, "Five loaves and
two fish are all we have here." Then he said, "Bring them to me," and he
ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and
the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the
loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the
crowds. - Mt 14:17-19

ENVIRONMENTALISM
Environmentalism emerged
as a key theme in the 2008 edition of World Youth Day held in Sidney,
Australia, July 15-20, 2008.
In his message to the youth from around the world Pope Benedict XVI
listed environmental challenges as among those global phenomena
currently “perplexing” young people and sometimes depriving them of
hope. “They see great damage done to the natural environment through
human greed,” the Pope said. “They struggle to find ways to live in
greater harmony with nature and with one another.” The Pope wanted to
focus on the role of the Holy Spirit as Creator, and thus human
responsibilities toward creation. While recognizing that religion is
facing something of a crisis in the Western world, he stated that
various forces today illustrate the need for religious faith – among
them, environmental challenges. “In this historical moment, we begin to
see that we do need God,” the Pope said. “We can do so many things, but
we cannot create our climate. We thought we could do it, but we cannot
do it. We need the gift of the Earth, the gift of water, we need the
Creator. The Creator reappears in his creation. And so we also come to
understand that we cannot be really happy, cannot be really promoting
justice for all the world, without a criterion at work in our own ideas,
without a God who is just, and gives us the light, and gives us life…
It is not my intention to enter into the technical questions, which
politicians and specialists have to resolve, but to offer essential
impulses for seeing the responsibility, for being capable of responding
to this great challenge: rediscovering in creation the face of the
Creator, rediscovering our responsibility before the Creator for the
creation which he has entrusted to us, forming the ethical capacity for
a style of life that’s necessary to assume if we want to address the
problem posed by this situation and if we really want to arrive at
positive solutions.”
