FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Throughout his life, Jesus found joy in showing the merest ones that the Father was making them God’s dearest children. The humble and poor ones knew their need for God’s mercy and loving kindness, and thus they alone could approach God as Jesus did: like trusting, loving children. The simple people – those whom Jesus called “little ones” – showed that they were really the wise and understanding ones. They welcome the reign of God made flesh in Jesus. And they took his yoke upon their shoulders.

In Jesus, the yoke becomes a pole to help us bear our burdens, a yoke of love that binds us with him in service to our God and to each other. For us, discipleship is how “the Lord lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.”

"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light." - Mt 11:28-30

COHABITATION - What the Church Teaches

Until 1970, cohabitation was illegal throughout the United States. But secular attitudes toward unmarried couples living together have changed. According to U.S. Census reports, more than 5 million unmarried men and women are living together in the U.S., an increase of one thousand percent since 1960.

Today, over 50 percent of newly married couples have lived together before their wedding. Fourteen percent of them had lived with a previous partner.

The Catholic Church disagrees with those who choose cohabitation over marriage. As Catholics, we believe that marriage is the permanent union of a man and a woman, instituted by God, for the good of both spouses and for bringing new life into the world. This love between a man and a woman is more than just sexual chemistry. It involves the total giving of each person’s physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual being without any reservations. In the eyes of the Catholic Church, marriage can never be considered a temporary or “trial” arrangement. These Catholic beliefs are grounded in the revelation of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ. The Sacrament of Matrimony, the importance of the family, the sacredness of sex, and the dignity of the human person are part of God’s divine plan.

Studies show that married people attain higher levels of personal happiness, emotional fulfillment, sexual satisfaction, mental stability, good health, and positive relationships with extended family members. When couples choose to cohabit, however, there is no spiritual foundation for the union, no lifelong commitment, and no promise of fidelity, which leaves the relationship open to feelings of instability. If couples see their relationship as merely a sexual union that can be terminated when passions cool, boredom sets in, or someone more interesting comes along, the result can be disastrous.

Couples often claim living together is a good way to test their compatibility before making a permanent commitment, but nothing could be further from the truth. Couples who live together before marriage actually face a higher risk of divorce than those who do not – up to 85 percent higher, according to several studies. One reason is that many cohabiting couples drift into marriage as the next logical thing to do without any intentional decision to commit to each other for life.
