TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Correction is a small but important way of fulfilling the commandment to love each other. Jesus tells us that all of us have the responsibility of correcting others, our peers and even our superiors. It is not Christian to shut our eyes in the face of evil, because we are part of the community, part of the Body of Christ.

Jesus tells us that correction is called for when a wrong is committed against us. Also, Jesus encourages us to deal with an offender directly and privately. People have to acquire the necessary skills to accomplish correction in an effective and appropriate way. That’s why correcting others is called “though love.” Each Eucharist reminds us of our obligations as disciples of Jesus and as members of his Body.

La correzione fraternal fa parte del commandamento di amarsi gli uni gli altri. Deve essere fatta direttamente e privatamente quando il male è fatto a noi stessi. Ma per essere efficace, la correzone richiede di essere fatta in una maniera giusta. Ogni celebrazione eucaristica ci ricorda dei nostri obblighi come discepoli di Gesù e membra del suo Corpo Mistico.

 

"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother.  A PERSONAL APPROACH TO RELIGION

A generation or two ago Catholics practiced their faith more than those of other traditions; today, in general, they do so less than others. A generation or two ago Catholicism was expressed and transmitted culturally. Today, religion is not, in general, expressed and transmitted as effectively at a cultural level.

Religion for evangelicals and some other Protestants has often been more a personal than collective expression. That has been a good fit for those traditions in a time of globalization and an increasing emphasis on personal choice as people live further from families of origin, marry later, have fewer children, and identify less with neighborhood-based subcultures. Catholics are still getting used to this change – but where they have, for example in parts of the South and West where they are relative newcomers or in newer suburban areas, they have made the transition relatively well, and the church, relatively speaking, is flourishing.

The challenge is to change our way of thinking from a church that lives with our subcultural, ethnic, or any other form of collective identity to a church that lives with our own personal, individual identity. Catholicism will no longer do well if we expect it to simply be socialized into the next generation by some sort of allegedly near-automatic process; it has to be accepted by each and every person, one at a time and on an ongoing basis.

There is plenty of room for Catholicism and religion in general at the level of the person. That is not to deny the communal and sacramental nature of Catholicism. Today, however, instead of entering Catholicism collectively, people enter individually – and then as individual persons come to a communal experience of the tradition. We Catholics have to take our religion personally.

It includes the famous Children’s Program as well as Art & Culture Classes and Cooking, Ceramics & Mosaic Classes. FALL MAILING: Our parishioners and friends will receive the Fall Mailing from our Church which will include a brochure with the schedule of events for FY 2008-2009, memberships forms for the Sodality of Mary and the Holy Name Society, a subscription renewal form for the new Voce Italiana, a brochure of our Casa Italiana Language School, and an order form for the book of the history of our parish, “An Italian American Community of Faith: Holy Rosary in Washington, DC. ITALIAN FESTIVAL AT VILLA ROSA takes place today, September 7, 2008, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. FREE admission.

RELIGION CLASSES will begin on Sunday October 19, 2008. Children who will be 7 years old next year and can receive Holy Communion, and youngsters 12 and over who wish to receive Confirmation are encouraged to register. Parents can pick up registration forms in back of Church.

CINEFORUM sponsored by the Friends of Casa Italiana, Sunday 14 September at 2 PM: The Leopard by Lucchino Visconti with Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Dilon, on the 50th Anniv. of the publication of the The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Pino Cicala. Refreshments will be available.

      35TH ANNUAL ITALIAN-AMERICAN OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT will take place on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 8:00 AM at the Falls Road Golf Course in Potomac, Maryland. Registration begins at 8:00 AM with a shotgun start at 9:00. Before teeing off, enjoy fresh coffee and donuts while practicing during the rounds. Enjoy cocktails at the tent located at the 19th hole. At the end of the tournament, there will be an elaborate lunch buffet, including those famous sausages and peppers plus our spectacular raffle of 50+ prizes! We are seeking tournament sponsors or Tee sponsors. We encourage you to consider sponsoring a portion of the Tournament. Even if you don’t play golf, you can enjoy the day at the beautiful Falls Road Gold Course with old and new friends, great food and sportsmanship.
