TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’” In the Gospel Jesus quotes the last verse of the first reading. What does God desire? Not sacrifice – if it lacks love. Rather, God shares and wants a love that extends to the outcast and sinner, as Jesus’ table fellowship did. In telling this story Matthew said to the church that all were to be accepted at the table.

SA28-08

The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." - Mt 9:11-13

MODERNITY AND BELIEF

Charles Taylor’s new book, A Secular Age (Harvard University Press, $39.95, 896 pp.), is now the entry ticket – states Peter Steinfels – for any serious discussion on secularization, especially the raging debate over the “secularization thesis,” the idea that traditional religion cannot survive the “acids of modernity.”

In reality, modernity didn’t mean the decline of religion in the United States, a society that is virtually the exemplar of modernity and remains stubbornly religious.

According to one thesis, modernization and secularization have been tightly interwoven with the assumption that modernity involved the emancipation of different spheres of activity (the state, the economy, and science) from pre-modern religious tutelage. Other understandings of secularization that religion was destined to disappear altogether or persist only in a sphere of the private or personal proved to be a myth.

Taylor believes that the present situation is extremely problematic with a pluralism of outlooks and a new placement of the sacred or spiritual in relation to individual and social life. Now confronted with a vast range of spiritual alternatives, the individual often opts for “believing but not belonging,” increasing the number of those who are nominally Christian in today’s secular society. For them, religion becomes either “an ancestral memory” or a resource for making rites of passage or for providing comfort in the face of some disasters, with far less continuity from parents to children.

The unanswered question is how can the institutions necessary for the formation of a genuine Catholic identity be maintained, reexamined, and renewed? Will such Catholic identity be found in homilies, parish life, Catholic educational initiatives?
