FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

The history of world religions is filled with treasures of wisdom and inspirations. Sadly it is also filled with strife, division, intolerance, and bloodshed. Before his famous conversion, Saint Paul, formally known as Saul, had been a zealous persecutor of the early followers of Jesus. Helping Paul find acceptance among the apostles, Barnabas performed a great act in the service of interfaith dialogue and inclusiveness. The God we worship is beyond all denominational and doctrinal differences and disputes. The creator of all must by logic be the God of all. In some small way today, reach out to a follower of another tradition in tolerance, and help heal the wounds that still exist.

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit." - Jn 15:1-2

PRIESTS NEEDED FOR A COMPREHENSIVE PASTORAL CARE

Last Sunday was Good Shepherd Sunday and a Day of Prayer for Priests. Beginning June 19, 2009, the Church will observe the Year of the Priest. In view of the priest shortage in the United States increased prayer for vocations becomes necessary but it is not sufficient. Open discussion about how to sustain the Church as a Eucharistic community of faith and fortify the pastoral life of Catholic congregations has become imperative. A narrowly sacramental definition of priesthood, contained in Canon 530, must be integrated with the comprehensive pastoral care of Canons 528 and 529, which provide a broader understanding of the priestly ministry. The first sees the priest as one who instructs, catechizes, fosters works of justice, shows special care for the education of children and brings the Gospel to those who have ceased to practice the faith. The second requires that he should come to know the faithful entrusted to his care, visit families, share their concerns, worries and griefs, help the sick and seek out the poor, the afflicted and the lonely. Diminishing numbers make it difficult to carry out this holistic vision of the priest’s pastoral ministry.

How can we increase the number of priests? “A modest proposal” has been put forward of recruiting and training married men as priests. Married priests already minister in the Catholic Church, both East and West. More than 100 former Anglican and ordained Lutheran ministers, who have entered the Catholic Church, now serve in the Latin rite. Some of the more than 16,000 permanent deacons in the United States, of whom many are married, might be called to ordination. We must face the problem of priest shortage fully open to the possibilities offered by the Holy Spirit. The topic of married priests, stated Cardinal Edward Egan recently, “is a perfectly legitimate discussion.”

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH Sabrina Vittoria Foster, daughter of Christian Paul and Patrizia (Ienzi) Foster who was baptized in our Church Sunday, May 3rd , 2009.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! Today we celebrate Mother’s Day around the world. Our heartfelt best wishes to all mothers of our parish, together with our prayers for all our mothers who preceded us to our real homeland!

OUR HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS to the nine children of our parish – Sal Brunitto, Alessio Galata, Isabella Kane, Emmanuele Lusso, Matteo Marchi, Kiara Kelly Mion, Alexander Smith, Filippo Venturoni, and Leonardo Lugli Watkins – who are receiving their First Holy Communion today at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. May God bless them and keep them close to His heart. At the conclusion of the First Communion Mass the May Crowning will take place. After Mass, the children and their families are welcome to Casa Italiana for refreshments.

TODAY IS HOLY NAME SUNDAY: members will attend the 9:00 a.m. Mass followed by a meeting in the Lower Church Hall, with Joe Latchford, Region 4 Vice President, National Holy Name Society, as a guest speaker.

THE SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY is for the Catholic Relief Services. This collection makes possible the mission of the Catholic Church to combat poverty, provide relief and development, assist refugees and immigrants, and advocate for justice and peace in situations of conflict and neglect of basic human rights throughout the world. Please help by giving to the collections next Sunday.

EASTER DUTY: The second precept of the Church (“You shall confess your sins at least once a year”) ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which continues Baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness.

The third precept of the Church (“You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy Communion at least during the Easter Season”) guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feast, the origin and center of Christian liturgy. The Easter season ends with the conclusion of Vespers on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2009.

FATHER JOHN ANTHONY ROSSI, who as a deacon served in our parish, will celebrate his first Mass on Sunday, May 17th, 2009 at 3 p.m. in St. Peter Church (43 West Maple Avenue, Merchantville, N.J.), followed by a reception in the parish hall. A bus trip is planned for $35 per person. Anyone interested, contact Anna Falcone at 301-422-7757 or email nonna_anna@msn.com.
