TWENTY-EIGHT SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Gospel has a get-rich-quick scheme you may not have tried yet. It’s fail-safe and works equally well in shaky economic times as in secure ones. It might be called total divestment. Jesus offers this plan to the rich fellow who comes to him asking for the secret to inheriting eternal life. Sell everything, Jesus urges him, and give the money to the poor. Once free from money management, come and be a disciple. The fellow declines. Most of us do. But if we take even a few steps in that direction, how much richer we would be!

They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God." - Mk 10:26-27

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

On October 18, World Mission Sunday will be celebrated in our parish to remind us of or Baptismal responsibility for the missionary task. World Mission Sunday is a very special celebration for the whole Catholic world. We could say that t his is our annual flesh-and-blood way of continuing Pentecost. Just what is World Mission Sunday all about?

It is universal celebration, one that takes place at the altar of churches worldwide. The Church draws us on that day to the Eucharistic table to renew the missionary vocation given to us at Baptism. It also invites us to pray for the missionary needs with material support, and even to consider service ad gentes as a missionary.

The solidarity with people all over the world -- many already committed to Christ and drawing sustenance from His Body and Blood, and many more still waiting to know Him and to be one with Him - is made real through your participation in World Mission Sunday.

The goal of the Church’s mission is to illuminate with the light of the Gospel all people journeying through history towards God, so that through Him they may be fully realized and accomplished. The mission of the Church is to call all peoples to the salvation accomplished by God through His Incarnate Son.

We must live the longing and the passion to illuminate all peoples with the light of Christ so that all may be gathered into the one human family.

RELIGIOUS CLASSES begin today. Children who will be 7 years old next year can receive Holy Communion and youngsters 12 and over who wish to receive Confirmation are encouraged to register. Parents can pick up registration forms in the back of the Church.

TODAY at 12:00 noon, the Annual Christopher Columbus Memorial Mass is held at Holy Rosary Church, sponsored by the D. C. State Council, Knights of Columbus. A civic ceremony follows at the Christopher Columbus statue in the Church courtyard. Everyone is welcome to participate.

NEXT SUNDAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY. United with the Catholics of the world at the table of the Lord, we recommit ourselves to our vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries. Our prayers and Eucharistic celebration next Sunday are directed in a special way toward our brothers and sisters throughout the world who are waiting to hear the joyous “Good News” of Jesus. Our offering through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, will support the work and witness of those who selfishly give up all for the sake of our Lord and His Gospel -- the local priests, Religious and lay catechists who daily provide loving service to the poor and suffering of the Developing World.
