EASTER SUNDAY: THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD
“On this day, the first of days” is the opening line of a hymn to be sung
on Sunday, the first day of the week. It’s called the first day by
Christians, because the resurrection recalls the first creation. Even
better than Sunday, we think of it as “The Lord’s Day.” Each Sunday is a
“little Easter” when Christians worldwide celebrate the Pascal Mystery.
And just as Christ’s resurrection makes him the first of many brothers and
sisters, so also Resurrection Day was the first of countless Easters.
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed and among us! And we will alleluia all
the way home!
|

Then the other disciple also went
in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from
the dead. - Jn 20:8-9

STAR STRUCK
Dante Alighieri, the
greatest poet of medieval and modern times, who wrote the “Comedy,”
which posterity judged to be divine, dreamed a spiritual and civic
renewal of the whole of humanity in the name of “the Love that moves the
sun and the other stars.”
All three “canticles” of the Divine Comedy end with the word, “stars.”
In his long journey along the “straight way,” Dante spent many nights in
contemplation of the stars and gained the insight still relevant to
today’s situation that the empire (the state) is the sole remedy and
bridle for human avarice, and that the Church must return to purity and
evangelical poverty.
Less than 300 years later, Galileo Galilei, the first person to use the
telescope to study the skies, discovered the four moons of Jupiter and
made us aware of our infinitesimal place in this incredible universe.
Recently we found that the planet Jupiter has not four but 64 moons.
“The universe is approximately 13.7 billion years old. We know that
beyond the few thousand stars visible to the naked eye, there are more
than 100 billion galaxies, each with perhaps 100 billion stars of
immense variety. We have discovered quasars that emit the light of a
trillion suns and stars that are 40 million times brighter than our
sun…”
The incredible universe is ours to discover by gazing at the stars. We
know now that the universe is expanding, and with it our notion and
appreciation of the power of the loving God must also expand by
contemplating the magnificent scenario set before us by scientists.
