TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
What does it mean “to speak truth to power”? Jesus provides a good
example. He frequently confronted civic and religious authorities
whose use of power resulted in oppression of people. That did not make
Jesus a hero. Often he was thrown out of places, attacked and
ridiculed. Eventually he was killed for proclaiming the Good News. As
followers of Jesus the Christ, that is our inheritance. We must summon
the courage to speak the truth of our experience. We may not be called
to do this in epic moments so much as in our day-to-day relationships.
How do we speak the truth to people we love and live with every day?
How do we speak a truth that is transformative, not destructive?

He
summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes
to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his
life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it." - Mk 8:34-35

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE
Change in societal
attitudes toward marriage and family life, wrote Archbishop Donald
Wuerl, is affecting the church and the common good today. In a letter
to 300 local Catholic priests, Archbishop Wuerl reminded them about
the church’s opposition to same sex marriage.
“The church’s
unchanging teaching reminds us that while marriage is a personal
relationship, it has a public dimension. The public aspect of marriage
is being undermined and the church is obligated to God against this
threat. For this reason, promoting marriage and family life is one of
the major priorities of the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops. It also is why we, in the Archdiocese are focusing so clearly
on the issue. We have so much to offer society by way of the true
meaning of marriage. The Catechism of the Catholic Church
reminds us ‘that the family is the original cell of social life
(2207).’ Marriage is the loving, faithful, permanent union of a man
and a woman. Marriage is a unique human institution in that it bonds
men and women who are different yet complimentary to one another in
the permanent relationship that is best suited for their total
exclusive self-giving love and the raising of a family.”
The
District of Columbia Catholic Conference has been speaking out against
the decision of elected officials in the District of Columbia to give
legal recognition to what are called “same sex marriages” performed in
other states.
The Stand for Marriage Coalition filed a request
for a ballot initiative that would allow voters to ensure that
marriage in the District of Columbia is legally defined as it has
always been: between a man and woman.
