SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel Jesus reaches out to touch the leper. That touch was
enough to heal the external sores and, best of all, those deep-down inner
hurts that come with rejection, exclusion, isolation. At Jesus’ word and
gesture the man is cured. He can lead a normal life again.
This simple story, set in a world so different from ours, has good news
for us. It tells us that Jesus is the friend of the outcast, that he
rejects no one who comes to him. Now, as then, Jesus’ touch gives hope
where there is no hope. His care restores people to union with one another
and with God.

A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down
begged him and said, "If you wish, you can make me clean." Moved with
pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, "I do will
it. Be made clean." - Mk 1:40-41

THE LOCAL CHURCH AND
THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL
The ongoing debate caused
by the lifting of the 20-year excommunication of four traditionalist
bishops, members of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X, is
questioning again the legacy of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65),
and the meaning of being church. After Vatican II, reminds us the
Filipino Jesuit Bishop Francisco Claver, there was much talk about
conservatives and progressives among Catholics in the way they accepted
or fought against the reforms brought about by the Council. Sometimes,
discussion was quite sharp and Catholics became polarized. What we
learned from those experiences is that we must keep talking to one
another and when we disagree, we must learn from one another and modify
our stands.
As previous generations before us, we must draw our strength from the
Scriptures. “Hope has emerged as the gift of God most desired and needed
in the world that is so fraught with evil and tragedy.” The Gospel of
new life in Christ summons both our Church and our society to reject
divisions of social and economic status and the misuse of hierarchical
power.
As for the Second Vatican Council, it did not discard any dogma of the
Church and did not promulgate any new dogma. It did recover, however,
important doctrines that had been relatively neglected in recent
centuries, such as the collegiality of the bishops, the priesthood of
all the baptized, the theology of the local church, the importance of
Scripture, and the role of lay people in the Church. A serious debate
about these issues would greatly enhance the vitality of our Church
today.
