THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
The story of the cleansing of the Jerusalem Temple is one of the few
included in all four gospels. It must have made a real impact on the
memory of the disciples that Jesus, this man of peace and gentleness, got
so worked up over merchants in the Temple providing services for
out-of-towners who came to offer sacrifice. Maybe Jesus didn’t like the
implied idea that people had a quid pro quo relationship with God, that
God’s graces could be somehow “bought.” Rather, he was zealous for the
Temple to be known as a house of prayer for everyone, a sign that God
provides for all who ask.

FOCUSING ON OUR GREAT
HERITAGE OF FAITH
This Lent 2009 our
parish and parishes across the Archdiocese of Washington are extending a
special invitation to those who might have drifted away from their faith
for whatever reason to come back to church, to stop by for prayer and
Mass. If you know a family member, friend, co-worker and/or neighbor who
isn’t here with us and should be, consider extending a gentle invitation
back. There are thirty million former Catholics in our country – this
means that approximately one out of ten Americans is an ex-Catholic.
There are probably thirty million reasons why these former Catholics
have lost the religion of their childhood. The French writer Bernanos
offers an explanation: “We don’t lose our faith. We simply stop shaping
our lives by it.”
These inactive Catholics
need to experience a personal, transfigurating encounter with Christ,
like Paul on the road to Damascus, and Peter, James and John on Mount
Tabor.
As Frank P. DeSiano
reminds us, “we have clearly entered a culture of choice whereby the
patterns young people receive from their families come to compete with
patterns from society at large. These patterns are shaped by an overall
cultural myth which says that the process of maturing involves leaving
behind what one has received, “finding oneself,” and remaking one’s life
according to one’s dreams. As such, the value of a tradition, with its
distinctive language and behavior becomes relative. Identity no longer
comes from children absorbing the culture of their parents, but rather
from staking out one’s chosen position in the marketplace of choice.
Inherent in this scheme is the “relativism” long bemoaned by Catholics.
One’s choice is one’s choice. The norm belongs to the chooser, who alone
validates the choice.”
This trend toward choice,
and away from tradition, forces us to do extensive outreach to inactive
Catholics through catechesis and religious-communal experiences, and by
reinvigorating our ministries of welcome and hospitality. “Catholics
need to focus again on their great heritage of faith, learning the
methods of how better to instill that heritage in a world of choice
that, having experienced great change, will undoubtedly experience it
even more in the future.”
