THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

In the apocalyptic literature, such as the book of Daniel, we read of the sun and the moon darkening, stars falling out of the sky, and the very “powers in the heavens” shaken at their core. In his stories the author used strong, vivid images his community would relate to. They were women and men who were under immense stress and oppression and who worried for the safety of their children. They needed to know that no matter what, even if the sun should cease to give light, God would continue to be with them. What would your story look like? What word of encouragement would you seek from God?

"And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’ with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky." - Mk 13:26-27

H1N1 FLU AND PARISHES

With the increase in influenza this year, no one is ever under an obligation to shake hands during the Sign of Peace (a statement of peace, bow, or other gesture is appropriate) or to receive from the chalice. Christ is fully present in each species when the bread and wine have been consecrated into His Body and Blood.

If you have any questions, please contact Fr. Mark Knestout, director of the Office of Worship, at mknestout@adw.org and 301-853-4595.

TELL CONGRESS: REMOVE ABORTION FUNDING & MANDATES FROM NEEDED HEALTH CARE REFORM

Congress is preparing to debate health care reform legislation on the Senate floor. Genuine health care reform should protect the life and dignity of all people from the moment of conception until natural death. The U.S. Bishops’ Conference has concluded that all committee approved bills are seriously deficient on the issues of abortion and conscience, and do not provide adequate access to health care for immigrants and the poor. The bills will have to change or the bishops have pledged to oppose them. ACTION: Contact Members of Congress through e-mail, phone calls or faxed letters:

To send a pre-written, instant e-mail to Congress, go to www.usccb.org/action
• Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, or call your Member’s local offices
• Full contact info can be found on Member’s web sites at www.house.gov  and www.senate.gov

MESSAGE TO SENATE: “During floor debate on the health care reform bill, please support an amendment to incorporate longstanding policies against abortion funding and in full favor of conscience rights. If these serious concerns are not addressed, the final bill should be opposed.”

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH Natalie Carmen Lynch, daughter of Brian Christopher and Lesley Anne (Ramos) Lynch; and Lauren Presley Ramos, daughter of Michael Gerrard Tantoco and Christy (Mullins) Ramos, who were baptized in our church on Sunday, November 8, 2009.

WE WELCOME to Holy Rosary Church today the members of the Lido Civic Club, a local organization of Italian American professionals and businessmen, who are with us this Sunday at the 9 AM Mass to pray for their deceased members. Our parish is grateful to this club for helping our church in many ways, especially with the Italian American Open Golf Tournament, whose profit it shares for the social and cultural events in Casa Italiana.

FATHER CAESAR DONANZAN BREAKFAST, sponsored by the Holy Name Society, takes place today, after the 9:00 AM Mass. A catered breakfast is served in Casa Italiana ($7. per person; free for children)

THE SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY is for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. This campaign was the brainchild of Monsignor Gino Barone, who convinced the American bishops of its worth. He proved himself correct. The collection is taken before thanksgiving for people to thank God for what they have received by helping the less fortunate in their midst. The greatness of this collection is that is disbursed through matching grants, so that poverty programs are helped with equal efforts from the local community. Please be generous.

HEALTH CARE REFORM: The U.S. Senate is preparing to debate health care reform legislation. The Catholic bishops of the United States strongly support genuine health care reform that protects the life and dignity of all, from the moment of conception until natural death. However, current bills are seriously deficient on abortion and conscience rights, and do not yet provide adequate access to health care for immigrants and the poor. In today’s bulletin, you’ll find out how to reach your Senator. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/healthcare.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION: Holy Rosary church is resuming its courses for Adult Faith Formation on the First Sunday of Advent, November 29, 2009, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Each course lasts six weeks. All adults are welcome to attend.

A WORLD OF THANKS to those who contributed to the moving celebration for the fallen of war: Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Ambassador Giulio Terzi, Maria Marigliano and the Holy Rosary choir. Also, special thanks to Biaggio Carannante for providing the exquisite refreshments.
