TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The beginning of today’s Gospel picks up where last week’s left off, reminding hearers of the life Jesus gives in himself, but this week with a twist: to participate in eternal life, a believer in Jesus really has to eat his flesh and drink his blood.

This communion is not merely symbolic; it is a real eating and drinking. The Eucharistic theme is clear: not only is partaking of Jesus’ body and blood necessary to live forever, but so is the Eucharist, wherein we feed on the bread of life.

"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me." - Jn 6:56-57

HEALTHCARE BASED ON VALUES

The late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago believed that a healthcare system worthy of human society must be designed on human and religious values, being aware of how precious human life is. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he delivered a speech at Georgetown University in which he concluded:

“I now face a very different horizon. In human terms, I have been advised my life span is now quite limited. This fact does shape one perspective decisively. The experience I am now going through sheds new light on the moral order also. As a bishop, I have tried, in season and out of season, to shape and share a moral message about the unique value of human life and our common responsibilities for it. As my life now slowly ebbs away, as my temporal destiny becomes clearer each hour and each day, I am not anxious, but rather reconfirmed in my conviction about the wonder of human life, a gift that flows from the very being of God and is entrusted to each of us. It is easy in the rush of daily life or in its tedium to lose the sense of wonder that is appropriate to this gift. It is even easier at the level of our societal relations to count some lives as less valuable than others, especially when caring for them costs us – financially, emotionally, or in terms of time, effort, and struggle.

The truth is, of course, that each life is of infinite value. Protecting and promoting life – caring for it and defending it – is a complex task in social and policy terms. I have struggled with the specifics often and have sensed the limits of reason in the struggle to know the good and do the right. My final hope is that my efforts have been faithful to the truth of the gospel of life and that you and others like you will find in this gospel the vision and strength needed to promote and nurture the great gift of life God has shared with us.”
