SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Today’s readings remind us that every one of us should be expected to be called.

First and foremost, we are called to live out our baptismal promises, to follow Jesus. We have put ourselves in the place where we can best hear God’s call. Here we are, today, in God‘s house, God’s dwelling place. We have gathered at Church to hear God’s word, with open ears and open hearts. We gather for Eucharist, to eat t he bread of life and drink the blood of God’s sacrifice for us. We know the Christ and we have answered t he call to follow him. We have come to the Church to listen to God’s call for us.

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. - Jn 1:35-37

BIOETHICAL QUESTIONS AND THE DIGNITY OF THE PERSON

“The ethical value of biomedical science is gauged in reference to both the unconditional respect owed to every human being at every moment of his or her existence and the defense of the specific character of the personal act which transmits life,” the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith says in an instruction on bioethics released last November.

One section of the documents deals with new problems concerning procreation, including techniques for assisting fertility; in vitro fertilization and the destruction of embryos; intracytoplasmic sperm injection; freezing of embryos and oocytes, reduction of embryos; preimplantation diagnosis; and new forms of interception and contra gestation.

Another section deals with new treatments that involve the manipulation of the embryo or the genetic patrimony such as gene therapy, human cloning, the therapeutic use of stem cells, hybridization and the use of human biological material of illicit origin. The Congregation says that “anyone who seeks to prevent the implantation of an embryo that may possibly have been conceived and who therefore either requests or prescribes” a pharmaceutical such as the morning-after pill or an intrauterine device “generally intends abortion.”

The congregation says that all people of good will, especially those who work in the medical field, should oppose techniques that are contrary to the dignity of the person; it says those involved in research do not have to actively oppose all of these techniques, but that they have “the duty to avoid cooperation in evil and scandal” in matters relating to “their ordinary professional activities.”
