TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Power, status, and self-worth. Everyone finds them important and probably even struggles with them in families, jobs, and souls. Today’s readings remind us, under the pressures to take control of our lives and surroundings, to seek positions of prestige, to compete with another, and somehow to feel worthy through it all, that in Jesus’ kingdom greatness and being “first” come from service to others. Because the Lord has experienced human suffering, weakness and temptation and has offered himself to redeem them, we can approach God’s merciful presence with confidence.

"But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." - Mk 10:43-45

WHY GO TO CHURCH: THE DRAMA OF THE EUCHARIST

The Mass is the central reason for most Catholics to gather in church. In his book, “Why Go to Church: The Drama of the Eucharist” (Continuum, London/New York), Timothy Radcliffe, former Master of the Dominican Order, goes through it element by chronological element, unfolding and enriching the symbolism and meaning of all that goes on during Eucharist. He looks at the Mass as a drama in three acts: faith, hope, and love.

We know that on Holy Thursday Jesus bade his friends to do what he had done “in remembrance,” but “we do not go to the Eucharist to remember an event that is simply past. We are touched by its present happening in our lives. Thomas Aquinas says that we encounter Christ not so much as risen but as rising. We are contemporary with the drama, rather like the Jews remembering the crossing of the Red Sea as an event that they share in even now, every time they celebrate the Passover. Now we are touched by the inexhaustible novelty of Christ.”

In his chapter on the general intercessions Radcliffe writes of the very notion of petitioning God, which some people think an unworthy sort of prayer. To the contrary, Jesus told his disciples to pray and in the Lord’s Prayer demonstrated asking God for what we need. “If we bring to God our real desires, then we will be in the presence of God as we are, rather than some false pious persona.”

In the Eucharistic prayer we pray for the pope and the local bishop by name as a way to say that our community is not just the group gathered in a parish church on Sunday morning, but the whole church all over the globe, undivided by space, time, or even death. At the end of the Mass we are sent forth, as the disciples were sent forth after Jesus returned to his Father, “free to leave the church… and go to other people, to share their lives and name the God who is already there.” Why go to church? We go “because we are offered a gift, Christ’s Body and Blood… We gather because Christ gathers us… The slow working of grace will free me to be sent at the end. Why go to church? To be sent from it.”

TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY. We are called to this Eucharistic celebration – along with Catholics in every parish, chapel and church throughout the world – to recommit ourselves to the call we heard at Baptism, to share our faith, to be missionaries. Let us pray at this Mass for all who long to hear the hope-filled, life-giving message of Jesus’ love and salvation. Let us offer generous financial help to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in support of the service of priests, Religious and lay catechists in more than 1,150 local churches throughout Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands and remote regions of Latin America.
