SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

If you are ever in a “Thomas state of mind” – doubting your faith, doubting God’s love, doubting our hope for redemption – consider all the great Christians who have gone before you who have experienced similar doubts: Mother Theresa, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint John of the Cross, saint Thomas Aquinas, to name but a few. Doubt isn’t the opposite of faith. In one of its forms, doubt is a recurring stage of faith. As we grow, change, and experience setbacks, our certainty may be shaken. Doubt sets in and forces us to review, update, and strengthen our core beliefs. Don’t be afraid to confront your doubts today.

Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed." - Jn 20:28-29

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. What exactly is Divine Mercy Sunday? Why do we need it? What’s the significance of this event being celebrated worldwide? What special graces are available on that day? How do I receive them? Is confession part of it?

Divine Mercy Sunday – the other title for the Second Sunday of Easter on April 19 – was established for the universal Church by the Holy See in the year 2000. It was done “in response to the desire of the faithful who wish to praise the Divine Mercy in divine worship, particularly in the celebration of the Paschal Mystery.” The focus of the Divine Mercy Sunday is on God’s unbounded love and mercy for us, sinful and broken humanity, manifested so visibly in Our Lord’s Paschal Mystery and continually poured upon us through the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist, and Reconciliation – sacraments of Mercy. We honor God’s mercy the most when we trust in Him, partake of the sacraments of His love, especially the Eucharist, and when we are merciful to one another.

It is the living Lord, who is truly present in the Eucharist, who pours out special graces of regeneration on those who unite themselves to Him in Holy Communion on this particular Sunday.

The plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intention of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g., Merciful Jesus, I trust in You!).

TODAY IS DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY. The picture of Christ as He appeared to St. Faustina is exposed in the sanctuary and the chaplet was recited before the 9:00 a.m. Mass.
