SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s first reading, we read Jeremiah’s prophecies against “bad
shepherds,’’ the kings who would allow Israel to go into exile. They did
not protect the people, and let them scatter, prey to their enemies. In
coming to their rescue, God will step in, become the good shepherd, and
raise up a new, perfect king. God will send a savior, a messianic figure
from the house of David who will regather the people in righteousness,
justice and safety.
Christians, of course, translated this hope for a messiah into their
beliefs about Jesus, who regathered the people of God. We as members of
today’s church gather around him as the good shepherd and, like him, offer
compassion, healing, service, teaching and ministry.
SEDICESIMA DOMENICA DEL TEMPO ORDIN-ARIO
Nel Vangelo di oggi, Gesù prende gli aostoli “in disparte” per
spiegare loro tutto. Essi sono un piccolo gregge, ma avente in se’ la
vocazione universale annunciata dai profeti.

When he disembarked and saw the vast
crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep
without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. - Mk 6:34

WHY SHOULD I MARRY IN
THE CHURCH?
Why should I get married
in a church, when an increasing number of Catholics live together and
those who marry divorce?
For Catholics, marriage is the exclusive union of a man and a woman, for
life, for the good of each other and their children. It’s loving,
faithful, freely-chosen, exclusive and open to children, and it’s a path
that makes spouses holy as we work with God in His ongoing act of
creation. So much does God join us on this journey that marriage itself
is worthy of a sacrament – a sign that God is right there, in the midst
of their lives, filling it with His love. This is why family life is
often called a domestic church, Christ present in their midst.
To get married in Church one needs documentation, marriage preparation
classes, meetings with the celebrant, because marriage is choosing your
partner for life, answering God’s call to live out your Christian life
as the spouse of the person you are in love with. Living together before
marriage clouds the process, with couples often “sliding into marriage”
simply because they are living that way already, but without really
stepping back and making sure this is their lifetime vocation.
Couples aren’t necessarily articulating all of this when they start out
to marry at a Catholic wedding. But they know intuitively that having
God in their marriage will somehow make it better. And in our
experience, when couples pray regularly and go to weekly Mass, the rate
of divorce plummets.
