SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS

How many saints are there? The lists of the canonized contain thousands of names, but the communion of saints is even fuller. In the Book of Revelation, St. John envisioned their number as vast and uncountable. It includes all the wonderful relatives and friends of happy memory, and a lot of really kind strangers you meet along the way. When you start to think about it, goodness encompasses a big number of folks. In the words of Saint Claud de la Colombiere: “It is possible to be a saint anywhere and everywhere when one really wishes to become one.”

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. …Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." - Mt 5: 3, 9

THE SACREDNESS OF LIFE

Modern society poses a full range of threats to life. We not only have to care for life, but we also have to defend it. In his encyclical, “The Gospel of Life,” John Paul II has identified three issues – abortion, capital punishment, and euthanasia – as the banners of what he described a creeping “culture of death.” In past Catholic tradition, capital punishment has not been regarded as “unjust killing” in the way abortion and euthanasia have been. But today, different types of life taking should be systematically related. The U.S. society today sustains nearly 1.5 million abortions annually, is overwhelmingly in favor of capital punishment, and is now moving rapidly toward acceptance of assisted suicide.

Respect for life, reminded us the late Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago, will cost us something. To move beyond solutions and problems, often solved by taking life, will require a more expansive care for life – at is beginning and its end. Assisted suicide, for instance, can be considered a deeply personal issue, but it also directly affects the doctor-patient relationship and, therefore, the wider role of doctors in society. Our witness would be more effective and persuasive to face present-day challenges if we viewed life across the spectrum, from conception until natural death, calling our society to see the connection between caring for life and defending it.

The Christian conception of caring for life, embodied in the daily witnessing and commitment of each one of us, must invite the wider society to see the linkage between care for and defense of life. These efforts from within the Church are essential to match the public witness of the Church in society.

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH Sara Emilia Paternoster, daughter of Ivano and Stacey (Young) Paternoster; and Orianna Amelia Smith, daughter of Douglas Allen and Agnese (Paternoster) Smith, who were baptized in our Church on Sunday, October 25, 2009.
