TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
It is perhaps a coincidence that in Mark’s Gospel the story of the
disciples arguing over “who was the greatest” directly follows Jesus’
revelation of his impending death. But looked at another way,
squabbling that follows immediately upon news of a death is an
all-too-common pattern when someone dies and his or her heirs quarrel
over who deserves the greatest share.
Humans often
instinctively react to a shock by “looking out for number one.” Jesus,
however, instructs his disciples to rise above their ego-preserving
instinct and instead devote themselves to selfless service. Are we up
to the challenge?

Taking
a child he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it he
said to them, "Whoever receives one child such as this in my name,
receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who
sent me." - Mk 9:36-37

THE WELCOME HOME REENTRY PROGRAM
The Welcome Home Reentry Program is now in its
fourth year of development in the Archdiocese of Washington. This
program is a parish-based ministry that recruits mature men and women
of faith to “walk with” those who are reentering society from jail and
prison. Volunteer mentors are trained to offer moral and personal
support and provide vital links to employment and community services.
The program is closely affiliated with Catholic Charities and the
Archdiocesan Secretariat for Pastoral Ministry and Social Concerns.
With the cooperation of pastors and parish
leaders, Father Michael Bryant, Catholic Chaplain at the D. C.
Detention Center, who has been involved in detention ministry for
almost 30 years, has been able to preach in 68 parishes at all the
Sunday liturgies. Using a basic tool of evangelization, Father Bryan
anchors his reflections in the Sunday Scriptures to help parishioners
view the issue of incarceration and reentry from a Gospel perspective.
To date the program is operating in the District of Columbia,
Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The hope is to expand the
program into the Southern Maryland counties of Calvert, Charles and
Saint Mary’s in the coming years. Currently, the program has provided
training to over 120 mentors. Seventy-three mentors are now partnered
with men and women on their way home.
The magnitude and the
makeup of the population incarcerated are real moral issues facing
this nation. Statistics show that we in the United States are 5% of
the world’s population and that we incarcerate 25% of all those
presently imprisoned on the globe. Most of the jailed are minorities
who are often poor and come from distressed homes and neighborhoods.
Frequently, they are undereducated, addicted, jobless and homeless. A
growing portion suffers from mental illness. Without help in their
transition home we know that 70% will fail to reintegrate effectively
and half will be returned to prison within three years of release. The
hurdles men and women face returning home are significant. However,
with help there is clear evidence that people can reenter society and
effectively become law-abiding citizens.
The success of the
Welcome Home Reentry Program depends on the involvement of leadership
at the parish level It is possible to make a real difference in the
lives of those returning home from prison which will lead to a safer
society for all. If you would like more information about this
program, I encourage you to contact Father Michael Bryant at
202-547-1715. (Most Rev. Donald W. Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington).
