TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
When Jesus and the apostles are caught in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee, the apostles are convinced that they are going to die. But they are even more upset that Jesus is not concerned – in fact he is sound asleep! Jesus rebukes them for a lack of faith, whereupon he calms the wind and the waves. Having faith will not necessarily still the wind and the waves. Bad things happen to good people; the wicked seem to triumph; our hopes and dreams often collapse. But God does not pluck us out of danger or remove us from difficult situations. We are not chess pieces, and the world is not a board game. God is present in these events and we are never alone. Our challenge is to respond to every situation with faith hope and love. Only then can the power of God work through us and transform our experiences into occasions of grace, and learning.

He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Quiet! Be still!" The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them, "Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?" - Mk 4:39-40

THE ECONOMY AND THE POOR

The late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago asserts that the bishops have a full right and compelling duty to come to terms with important topics such as the economy. It is the bishops’ duty – a duty which arises from their roles as teachers of moral truth – to address economic questions. However, the real questions concern the people. Are poor people protected against suffering rooted in economic disadvantage? Every society has a moral obligation to take the necessary steps to ensure that none of its members suffer from hunger, homelessness, and unemployment, or is denied what is necessary for a dignified life. Poverty in the world is so massive that we do not know yet how to deal with it. In political debates the question of the poor still exercises very little leverage.

The concept of “economic justice for all” is deeply rooted in the Scriptures. We must make space for the faces of the poor not only in our personal consciences but also in public agendas. The Church must speak for the poor and view the world from their perspective.

A consistent ethical life is a contribution that the Church can and should make in any nation’s public debates. These consistent ethics must include a substantial commitment to the poor, because to stand for the needs of the poor means to stand for life.
