TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Just as
Joshua took the lead in speaking for the Israelites in today’s first
reading, Peter does the same for us in today’s Gospel. When Peter asks
Jesus, “Master, to whom shall we go?” he is not implying that Jesus is
only slightly better than other alternatives. He expresses his gradual
awareness that Jesus is the Son of God, the only one who has the
“words of eternal life.” It is an amazing expression of faith, a vote
of confidence we renew every time we celebrate the Eucharist. We
listen to the word of God that is Spirit and life. We receive the Body
and Blood of Christ that gives us life. And in choosing to follow
Jesus, we go forth to share that life and love with others. We
believe. And we follow.
VENTUNESIMA DOMENICA DEL TEMPO ORDINARIO Se presa
siamo?
|
Jesus
then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter
answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of
eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the
Holy One of God." - Jn 6:67-69

CATHOLIC BIISHOPS ON HEALTH CARE REFORM
LEGISLATION
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops views
health care as a basic right belonging to all human beings, from
conception to natural death. They have long supported universal health
care reform that respects human life and dignity, provides access for
all, with a special concern for legal immigrants and the poor,
preserves pluralism with respect for rights of conscience and
restrains costs while sharing them equitably.
The Bishops
are urging Congress to make this legislation “abortion neutral” by
preserving longstanding federal policies that prevent government
promotion of abortion and respect conscience rights. No health care
reform plan should compel anyone to pay for the destruction of human
life, whether through government funding or mandatory coverage of
abortion. Any such action would be morally wrong. It also would be
politically unwise.
Moreover, decent health care is not a privilege
but a right and a requirement to protect the life and dignity of every
person. All people need and should have access to comprehensive,
quality health care that they can afford, and it should not depend on
their stage of life, where or whether they or their parents work, how
much they earn, where they live or where they were born.
The Catholic Bishops urge
Congress to ensure sufficient funding for safety-net clinics,
hospitals and other providers serving those who will continue to fall
through the cracks of a reform system. Health care is a critical
component of the Catholic Church’s ministry. The Church provides
health care and picks up the pieces of a failing health care system.
The Catholic community encounters and serves the sick and uninsured in
our emergency rooms, shelters and on the doorsteps of our parishes.
One out of six patients is cared for in Catholic hospitals. Catholics
bring both strong convictions and everyday experience to the issue of
health care.
