THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The story of Bartimaeus presents an extraordinary example of faith and discipline. Unlike the cure of the blind man in chapter 8, Bartimaeus comes to Jesus himself, rather than others bringing him. His initiative continues in his calling out to Jesus – in this Gospel he is the first besides a demon to call on Christ by a name and the first person to call him “master.” On top of that, though he is blind, Bartimaeus recognizes who Jesus really is the “Son of David.” He even persists through the attempts of others to hush him.

Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see." Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you." Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. - Mk 10:51-52

ADULT FAITH FORMATION

Holy Rosary Church is resuming its courses for Adult Faith Formation on the first Sunday of Advent, November 29, 2009, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. Each course lasts six weeks. All adults are welcome to attend.

As Laura Wright recently noted in the Catholic Standard , after Catholics choose a patron saint and the local bishop anoints them with chrism during confirmation, some feel like they have graduated from the Catholic Church and they don’t need to continue learning their faith.

There is definitely a need to change this graduation mentality. As people mature in their relationships and in handling their money, so it makes sense that they should also mature in their faith. Adults need to review the contents of their faith to accurately pass on the Gospel and the Catholic tradition to a new generation. Ongoing faith formation also helps Catholic adults understand Church teaching on challenging moral issues of today like embryonic stem cell research and the effort to redefine marriage. That way, they are not looking at complex issues with a child’s understanding of the faith.

As recent national surveys indicate, the United States is the most religious nation in the developed world, if religiosity is measured by belief in all things supernatural. Americans are also the most religiously ignorant people in the Western world. Fewer than half of us can identify Genesis as the first book of the Bible, and only one third know that Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount. American religious illiteracy is even more dangerous than general cultural illiteracy, because religion is the most volatile constituent of culture. We are urgently called to reconstruct through adult faith formation courses the “chain of memory” that once made the acquisition of religious knowledge as natural and breathing.
