THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Luke’s account of Jesus’ resurrection appearances includes Jesus in the role of “Bible teacher.” The disciples on the road to Emmaus and those in the upper room experienced Jesus in bodily form and also in his role as rabbi. He helped them “connect the dots” of their Jewish tradition so that they could see that the resurrection was the fulfillment of all their ancestors had hoped for. Easter helps us locate ourselves in the vast sweep of history, the constant working out of God’s irrepressible good will. God’s grace is not only for figures from biblical times but also for us. You are not included as an afterthought but the intended beneficiary of God’s grace since the beginning of time.

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day." - Lk 24:45-46

HUMAN STEM CELL RESEARCH AND CLONING

Stem cell research offers the promise of treating some of the most devastating diseases. According to the Catholic Church, adult stem cell research (adult stem cells are found throughout the body) is morally licit, while embryonic stem cell research (embryonic stem cells are cells within a developing embryo) is illicit, because human life is killed in obtaining these cells. For stem cell research the Church opposes only those methods that involve the destruction of human life. Therefore, adult stem cells are the alternative to embryonic stem cell research. It is wrong to take a human life. Reason and knowledge of basic biology tell us that an embryo is clearly a human life and human life must be respected at its very origin.

Cloning is the process of making an embryonic human being in the laboratory. The nucleus of a somatic cell is transferred into a denucleated egg and stimulated to divide and grow into a new human being. Both reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning are illicit because cloning “denies the dignity of the person subjected to cloning and the dignity of the human procreation.”

As faithful citizens of our nation, we have the right to have our voices heard. As faithful Catholics we have an obligation to speak up in defense of the dignity of human life.

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH Siena Santaiti Assaly, daughter of Jason and Lisa (Eliott) Santaiti, who was baptized in our Church on Sunday, April 19, 2009.

THE SECOND COLLECTION TODAY is for the Catholic Home Missions. There are many places in America – Appalachia, the Deep South, the Southwest and the Rocky Mountain states – where the Catholic Church struggles just to keep parishes open and to educate children in the faith. Many dioceses are short of priests, sisters and the money needed to run their parishes. Through the Appeal, we have the opportunity to help protect and preserve our Catholic community here in the United States.

NEXT SUNDAY, May 3, 2009, at the 10:30 a. m. Mass we will celebrate the May Feast of Our Lady of Pompei with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and recitation of the SUPPLICA. After the Church celebration, refreshments will be served at Casa Italiana, compliments of Biagio Carannante.

THE SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY is for the Renovation Fund. The projects for this year are making handicapped accessible restrooms facilities in Casa Italiana, enlarging its kitchen, and restoring the Church Hall. Please, be generous.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION CLASS is held after the 9:00 a.m. Mass in the conference room in the lower level of the rectory.

REV. MR. JOHN ANTHONY ROSSI, a deacon who has served in our parish, will be ordained priest by Bishop Joseph A. Galante of the Diocese of Camden, on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass in the St. Peter Celestine Church, Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Our sincere thanks to Deacon Rossi for serving in our parish this year together with our best wishes and prayers for a successful priestly ministry. A bus trip is planned to attend Father Rossi’s first Mass on Sunday, May 17th. For info call Anna Falcone at 301-422-7757 or email nonna_anna@msn.com.

THE 2009 FESTA ITALIANA will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This year’s featured region is Puglia. Please mark your calendar to join us. Volunteers are needed to assist with the cultural activities, children’s entertainment, and silent auction prizes and other logistics.
