TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Religious traditions have a funny habit of condemning all other
traditions. It wasn’t that long ago that Catholics consigned all
Protestants to hell, and vice versa. But Jesus taught extraordinary
tolerance and acceptance of everyone of good will. We embrace our
faith, but not the rejection of Jews, Muslims, other Christians, or
even non-believers. We are all in this together.
Perhaps we
should all remember what Pope John XXIII said: In essential matters,
let there be unity; in nonessential matters, liberty; in all matters,
charity.

Jesus
replied, "Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed
in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not
against us is for us." - Mk 9:39-40

YEAR FOR PRIESTS
As the Church marks the “Year for Priests” (20 June 2009 – 20 June
2010), the standoff between “Vatican II Priests” and the “John Paul II
Priests” re-emerges again. The first ones served the Church during a
period of dramatic transformation; the second ones during a period of
resistance, revision and sometimes reversal.
The “Vatican II
Priests”, who are now passing from the scene into retirement or final
rest, leave behind a list of characteristics we can treasure as well
as useful for priests starting out.
Ordinary parish priests,
known in their own dioceses for fighting the good fight to the end,
have always shown these qualities:
• They were loyal to the
Church and obedient to their bishops, even under duress, but not
blindly or without protest when they felt the pastoral good of the
Church was at stake. • They were good pastors, good listeners,
down-to-earth preachers who didn’t need to have all the answers and
were eloquent by example if not always in words. They had a sense of
humor. • They put people first, love before legalism, especially
for anyone who was hurting or being treated unfairly. They respected
and had collaborative relationships and real friendships with women.
• They held liturgy and ministry, worship and life, the altar and the
streets as inseparable, where the Incarnation is made visible and
everything is sacramental. • They were imperfect human beings, and
both their strengths and weaknesses defined the priesthood and the
paschal mystery they served.
For the Scalabrinian priests, who
have been serving Holy Rosary Church for almost a century, another
time-tested characteristic must be added:
• They have been
congenial to the needs of Italian parishioners and welcoming all
others without reservation. They have been a bridge that created
unity, foster integration and a sense of real belonging. They will
continue to be that bridge into the future.
