EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Why have people only seen the bread and not what the bread told them
about Jesus? It was the darkness inside that blotted out the clear signs
all around them: the signs of who Jesus was, the signs that could lead
them on the road to the kingdom. They eat eagerly, but do not see the sign
that God is with them.
Thankfully Jesus has not let us wander aimlessly in the worldly darkness.
The miraculous bread that he gave to the crowds, he gives to us here at
the altar table. This Eucharistic bread is the sign we all want, and need,
to see that he is here with us.
|

So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." Jesus said to
them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst." - Jn 6:34-35

1913-2013: A
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF FAITH
Looking ahead at the centennial
anniversary of Holy Rosary Church on December 15, 2013, we discover that
what sustained Holy Rosary parish during the past one hundred years and
what will keep it vibrant in the future is its evangelizing character.
Created as an instrument of evangelization for the Italian immigrants in
the greater Washington metropolitan area, Holy Rosary parish fostered
their ongoing conversion toward an encounter with the living God in
Christ Jesus. In the rude encounter with a highly institutional,
sacramental and hierarchical American Catholic Church, the inculturation
of the Gospel message was mediated by tradition and popular piety.
Generations of Italians found in Holy Rosary a home, a community with
clergy congenial to their needs. They felt welcome and secure and
experienced a sense of real belonging.
The challenge of an evangelizing Holy Rosary parish under the leadership
of Scalabrinian pastors, whose charism is to welcome others without
reservations and to be a bridge that creates unity and fosters
integration, is to create an environment of real hospitality strong
enough to overcome the innate tendency to close in on itself and huddle
together in homogeneous groups. A parish becomes “churchy” when it
closes in on itself and fails to see what is going on around it. Holy
Rosary parish is today characterized by so much diversity that needs to
be a real community of communities and movements. It also must maintain
and expand a variety of programs and services ( such as Casa Italiana
Cultural Center, Language School, Voce Italiana) that go well beyond
effective sacramental and liturgical ministries in order to respond to
the social, economic, and cultural possibilities of present and
potential parishioners. Teams must be formed to accomplish the
multilayered task of parish community building, including parish-based
social ministries, Internet and mass media resources. The critical
question today for Holy Rosary parish as in the past is precisely how to
attract, appeal to, and build deeper relationships with the faithful,
creating the conditions whereby many diverse groups experience a sense
of real belonging.
