TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
There is a challenge in today’s Gospel for Catholics. As we came to Mass this morning, we blessed ourselves with holy water, because it is a reminder of our baptism, that we are all sons and daughters of God the Father, brothers and sisters in Christ, and filled with the Spirit of love. We bring up gifts of bread and wine together with our monetary offerings that have been collected, because when these gifts are brought to the altar, we offer our very selves with them. We offer ourselves to God, and God gives us Jesus in Communion. But for rituals to “work,” to be effective, we have to work. We must love and serve our neighbors, especially the most vulnerable among us.

He summoned the crowd again and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile." - Mk 7:14-15

10 SIGNS OF A VIBRANT PARISH

The What makes a vibrant parish, one with vitality and a healthy life people recognize? A vibrant parish is alive with a pulse that is felt and seen from within by its members and externally by those who know it by its works, ministries and reputation. The following are ten signs of a vibrant parish:

1. All who enter experience welcome and hospitality.

2. Liturgy inspires active participation and offers an experience of God.

3. Parishioners recognize their parish mission. Parishioners know who they are and who they are called to be.

4. Collegial leadership is practiced by offering opportunities and responsibilities to many to take ownership of the mission and ministry of the parish.

5. Members are recognized as gifted and called forth to use their gifts.

6. Faith is nurtured through relevant preaching, religious education programs and missions.

7. Outreach to the body of Christ is practiced, particularly among the unchurched.

8. There is a plan for a sustainable and responsible future by bridging generations and different cultures.

9. Communal life abounds by gathering people for study, outreach, formation and fun.

10. Baptism’s vocational call is cultivated, because baptism calls all to ministry and discipleship.
