TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Few New Testament texts have had their meaning debated so vigorously as those in which Jesus discusses divorce. Biblical scholar Raymond F. Collins says there are eight versions of Jesus’ teaching on divorce and no easy way to identify which one reflects his views in their purest form. From the days of the early church to the present, the question continues to provoke debate. What can be said with confidence, however, is that divorce is always painful for those involved or directly touched by it. Hug a friend hurt by divorce today—and give yourself a hug if you are that person!

"‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." - Mk 10:7-9

SAME SEX MARRIAGE: WHY THE CHURCH CARES

Earlier this year, the District of Columbia City recognized same sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions. In September marriage supporters, filed a request for a ballot initiative that would affirm marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The Archdiocese of Washington has submitted a letter supporting this initiative. Now some members of the City Council are moving ahead to redefine marriages performed within the District of Columbia itself. There is a reason cultures worldwide have had the same definition of marriage for thousands of years. Before rushing ahead, we all really need to carefully consider what marriage is, and why it exists.

The bottom line is because marriage matters. Marriage is a private relationship with public significance. Marriage is about a lot more that two people who love each other. This love leads to the second important reason why marriage is between a man and a woman; giving children a structure in which they are created and nurtured, benefiting from the unique gifts of both father and mother.

It is important for you to be informed. Learn more about marriage at www.MarriageMattersDC.org.
And, feel comfortable sharing with elected officials and friends the truth that marriage is, by definition, between a man and a woman.
