PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION
With Palm Sunday we enter into Holy Week. The two gospel readings show us
the real contrast we experience in Holy Week: rejoicing and grieving,
happiness and infinite sadness, celebration and sorrow. The only way we
can share Christ’s glory is to share in his death. We are servants; we
cannot be better than Jesus. If we want to celebrate on Easter, we must go
through the passion and death, the ignominy, the pain, the dying. Then we
can rise on Easter with Jesus. As disciples and servants of Jesus, we
follow Him daily, living the full human life with sorrow and joy, caring
for each other, struggling to be the best we can to and for each other. We
must say “yes” to dying with Jesus, say “yes” to Jesus in others even when
we cannot see him or even see them. Only then can we rise to new life.

Those preceding him as well as those
following kept crying out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come!
Hosanna in the highest!" - Mk 11:9-10

THE RISEN
LORD IN THE SUFFERING MIGRANTS
Enforcement-only regimes
and Latino-bashing on the part of some left-behind nativist advocates is
nonsense. Most Americans want immigration solved and they realize that
mass deportation will not do that. Immigration priorities should be
redefined by the Obama administration. The Homeland Security Department
and Immigration and Customs Enforcement should deport high-risk criminal
illegal immigrants, not law-abiding citizens contributing to the
national wellbeing – including longtime residents with children here and
compelling claims to stay. For example, there are more than 30,000
Haitian citizens who have been ordered deported from the United States
back to an island of unimaginable suffering and extreme poverty. “Mr.
Obama recently issued an order that allowed Liberian immigrants to stay
temporarily in the United States. Immigrants from Somalia, El Salvador,
Nicaragua and Honduras have also been granted TPS in recent years. Why
are immigrants from a disaster-wracked country that is the poorest in
the hemisphere less deserving?” (WP, 3/30/09)
The new President, as he promised during his campaign, must push for
comprehensive legislation that balances law enforcement with opening of
new legal pathways to citizenship. Bringing “out of the shadows” the
11.9 million unauthorized immigrants will ultimately benefit the
economy. “The Constitution’s bedrock protections do not apply to just
the native-born. The suffering that illegal immigrants endure – from
raids to workplace exploitation to mistreatment in detention – is a
civil rights crisis. It cannot be left to fester while we wait for the
big immigration bill that may or may not arrive under this president.” (NYT,
3/29/09). We agree with the Catholic bishops of Nebraska that “the
system of laws and policies now governing immigration in the United
States is in need of reform. Therefore, anyone who voices concern about
illegal immigration must also be willing to engage in some degree of
respectful political advocacy for comprehensive immigration reform.”
