FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus returns to his hometown to proclaim the
message that’s begun to be well received far and wide. But the hometown
folks can’t get past their preconceived notions of Jesus. “Hey, we know
all there is to know about this guy. Who does he think he is?” Because of
their shortsightedness, they miss out on the Good News that Jesus
embodies.
Sometimes families pull this same trick on one another. We lock one of our
family members into a role he or she played long ago, and we lack the
ability to welcome all that he or she might have become. This is not only
a disservice to the person who is locked in, but to everyone, because then
we miss out on the good news of the gifts they have to offer. There was
more to Jesus than met the eye. There’s more to each of us than meets the
eye. Look at those around you with fresh and expectant eyes. Be ready to
be surprised.

Jesus said to them, "A prophet is
not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and
in his own house." So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. - Mk
6:4-5

LIFE, LOVE AND
WEDDING BELLS
With wedding season upon
us and marriage being a widely-discussed topic in the media, it is
important to look at the essence of marriage as the loving, faithful,
permanent union of a man and a woman, whose love for each other is free,
total and open to life.
Divorce is rampant and living together outside marriage is routine. But
from the beginning of creation God intended man and woman to be united
in marriage and Jesus affirmed the sacredness of marriage by choosing a
wedding feast as the setting for his first miracle.
Social science indicates that rather than serving as a marriage “test
run”, in some cases living together is even associated with a higher
incidence of divorce. Where conventional wisdom suggests divorce if your
“needs aren’t met,” the Catholic experience suggests that it’s meeting
the other’s needs and making a commitment that is the key. Where the
world sees parenthood as a deliberate choice, the Church believes that
being open to children is essential for spouses. And while society has
begun to sanction an increasingly varied number of sexually-based life
styles, Catholics remain committed to a choice which has proven, through
the millennia, to be good – not only for the individuals making the
choice – but for society at large.
Marriage is the exclusive union of a man and a woman, for life, for the
good of each other and their children. It’s loving, faithful,
freely-chosen, exclusive and open to children. In fact, it’s worthy of a
sacrament – a sign that God is right there, in the midst of the action,
filling it with His love.

TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION TODAY
is for the Renovation Fund. The projects for this year are making
handicapped-accessible restrooms facilities in Casa Italiana, enlarge
its kitchen, and restoring the Lower Church Hall. Please be generous.
TODAY, at the 9:00 Mass, we honor Saint Maria Goretti, who
entered the kingdom of heaven 107 years ago on Sunday, July 6, 1902. The
Mass offering, the flowers on the Main Altar, the bread and wine, and
the Church Sanctuary Lamp are offered in honor of Saint Maria Goretti by
Richard N. Goetzinger.
2009 ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL: All our parishioners who have not made
a gift in 2009 to the Archbishop’s Appeal are kindly asked to fulfill
their pledges. Our parish goal for 2009 is $15,668.70. According to the
most recent report of May 1, 2009, Holy Rosary parishioners pledged
$18,037 but so far paid $9,582. Let us ALL join in and together we will
reach easily our parish goal. Thank you for your prayerful consideration
and generous response.

LA SECONDA COLLETA OGGI è per il
Fondo Restauri.
entrò in cielo 107 anni fa, domenica 6 luglio 1902.
