TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Today’s Gospel tells us that no sooner had Jesus said the word
ephphatha than “immediately the man’s ears were open, his speech
impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly.” How well do we listen?
Do we listen when Jesus speaks to us? How well and how often do we
speak up in the face of obvious injustice and discrimination?
Today Jesus touches our ears and our mouth and says to us his one
powerful word of healing: “Be open!” We leave this Mass today with new
ears open to hear the Good News of God’s unconditional love and with
new tongues loosened to speak up the truth, the love, the peace that
are God ‘s gifts to us.
|
Then
he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, "Ephphatha!"---that
is, "Be opened!" And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech
impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. - Mk 7:34-35

REACTIVATING OUR CATHOLIC FAITH
In the lives of many Americans
faith is an activity that is eclipsed by other priorities. Family,
work, making money, vacations, and the tasks of “getting ahead” on the
way to the ever more elusive American dream have served as
distractions to the needs of faith.
In Reactivating Our
Catholic Faith (Paulist Press, New York, 2009), Paulist Father
Frank DeSiano examines this phenomenon well, exposing its emptiness
and allowing for an examination of the readers’ own consciences
regarding the rhythms of our lives. He refers to our modern
distractions as the modern myths that we settle for, rather than
taking faith seriously and not dropping it down on the list of
priorities.
With some certainty we can say that young people
are immersed in this very struggle. They often hold few if any grudges
against the Catholic Church; rather, faith is simply not ranked high
on their “to-do” lists. They often settle for a childish faith
complete with a superficial theology rather than one that can work
with their critical sensibilities as adults. Is it any wonder then
that faith is relegated to the back burner? DeSiano examines deep
questions of human meaning and couples them with the traditions of the
church and Scripture, uncovering the need for faith to be reactivated
so that people can push aside those distractions that keep them
embedded in emptiness and more deeply accept their roles as disciples
of Christ.
