FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel Jesus doesn’t waste any time in teaching in the
synagogue and confronting evil. This breathless pace might make us wonder:
How can anyone follow in Jesus’ footsteps?
St. Mark writes: “Rising very early before dawn, Jesus left and went off
to a deserted place, where he prayed.” If Jesus needed to pray in order to
do God’s work, it should be abundantly clear that we must do the same. If
we begin and end each day in prayer, we more closely resemble Jesus. When
we teach by good example and confront evil, when we heal and pray, we
become the very presence of Christ in the world. And through us living our
days with Jesus, the world not only will imagine but will know the love of
God in Christ Jesus.

He told them, "Let us go on to the nearby
villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come." So
he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout
the whole of Galilee. - Mk 1:38-39

SIX WAYS I CAN MAKE
MY PARISH BETTER
Recently Catholic parishes
in the United States have been tested by numerous closings and mergers.
Today, parishioners are expected to feel a true sense of ownership in
their parish. That means looking at your parish as more than just a
place where you go to Mass. It is a sacred place where people become
followers of Christ, receive spiritual nourishment, share in each
other’s support, and make new friends.
Here are six ways to do just that:
• Think of yourself as part of the parish family: Family members share a
common heritage and history.
• Be welcoming: Think of attending Mass as a large family reunion and
introduce yourself to people you don’t know or are standing by
themselves at the coffee-and-donut hour.
• Use your gifts and talents for the good of the parish: By becoming a
lector, an usher, a greeter, a Eucharistic minister, a choir member, a
catechist, or you can take Communion to the sick and homebound.
• Attend parish events or create new parish events: Besides the Mass,
other parish ministries, activities and events help to increase
spirituality and build community: A mission or retreat, a lecture, a
lasagna dinner, a recital, an exhibit, a golf tournament, a trip or
pilgrimage. Take advantage of opportunities to meet new people and
affirm your fellow parishioners who work hard to plan and execute these
events.
• Support your parish financially: Take a serious look at the money you
give to your parish each week. Do you increase your contributions each
year as the cost of living rises?
• Pray for your parish: Keep your pastor, parish staff, and fellow
parishioners in your daily prayers.
No parish is perfect, and even the best parishes can improve. Imagine
what would happen if every person in your parish did one little thing to
make the parish better?
