SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
Have you been to the mountaintop?
Was Jesus transformed, or were his disciples? These three friends of Jesus
were not always the most perceptive bunch. They weren’t a particularly
wise or well-schooled group of folks, especially when it came to formal
religious training. But on one special day they glimpsed the truth about
their friend and teacher. The story of Jesus’ transfiguration in front of
Peter, James and John serves as inspiration and promise that we, too, can
catch a glimpse of God’s glory, regardless of our walk of life or prior
training. All that is required is a willingness to follow Jesus to the
mountaintop.

Then a cloud came, casting a shadow
over them; then from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son.
Listen to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but
Jesus alone with them. - Mk 9:7-8

OCCASION FOR GROWTH
Even if the financial
crisis is spread throughout the world, this is no time for
discouragement, says the leader of Caritas Internationalis, Honduran
Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga. Instead, this time of scarcity
should be an occasion for growth, and solidarity is the solution.
Society must not fall into
what the Honduran Cardinal calls the “Cain’s Syndrome,” which is not to
bother about others. The present global financial crisis is not so much
economic as ethical, because crises flourish when we marginalize ethics
from life. As children of God, we should never take an attitude of “let
he who can save himself, “ but help one another, thereby avoiding
related consequences of poverty, such as the spread of violence and
organized crime. Indeed, if greed helped push us into this crisis,
stated Supreme Knight of Columbus, Carl Anderson, then generosity will
be necessary to help pull us out of it.
The second source of fear
is terrorism. We are still afraid. We are acutely aware of the world’s
many perils. Anybody who boards a plane, who knows what and who Iran and
North Korea are, who remembers Mr. Bush’s-post-9/11 failures to secure
chemical plants, to complete the urgent mission in Afghanistan, to catch
Osama Bin Laden, does not need to be convinced of the reality of
terrorism. The new Administration is quite aware of its duty to protect
the homeland, without striking the apocalyptic gong of
fear-for-fear’s-sake. But more importantly, as Christian pilgrims, we
know the end of the story at the beginning: resurrection follows
crucifixion, and life will overcome death.

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO TALK ABOUT OUR FAITH? For many of us our
faith is very personal, we’re not comfortable talking about it and don’t
want to be seen as “pushy.” Yet, why not share something that means so
much to you? Pick up an invitation at the back of the church and invite
someone you know to come back. This invitation may be just the
opportunity your friends and family members have been waiting for. For
more information and to read Archbishop Wuerl’s pastoral letter,
Belonging to God’s Family, visit
www.maybe-its-God.org.

marriage honoring couples married 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 50+ years

National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Archbishop Wuerl will be

the back of the church to register. Names of Jubilarians need to be
turned in to the Archdiocese before April 27, 2009.
2009 ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL: As you know, this is the time of the
year that we are asked to offer our financial assistance to support the
work of the Archdiocese of Washington by responding to the annual
Archbishop’s Appeal. We want to thank all those who have responded by
mail or during our in-pew solicitation Sunday. If you did not receive a
pledge form, you can find pledge envelopes and pencils at the Church
entrance. It is essential that ALL active households in our community
participate in order for us to reach our 2009 Parish goal of $15,668.70.

trovano all’ entrata della chiesa.
Favorite considerare una donazione all’Appello dell’Arcivescovo.
MARCATE IL VOSTRO CALEDARIO: 15 marzo: festa della Vendemia; 29
marzo: pranzo della lasagna & bazaar.
