BAPTISM OF THE LORD
In today’s Gospel we heard God say, “This is my beloved Son, with whom
I am well pleased.” Since our baptism identifies us with Jesus,
these words are meant to be applied to each one of us as well. As a
result of our baptism God calls us his beloved daughters and sons,
with whom He is well pleased. The anointing at baptism made us sharers
in the prophetic role of Jesus. Consequently, we are a priestly
people, we are a royal people, and we are a people called to be
prophets.
in fondo, senza riserve e privilegi.

After
all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and
was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in
bodily form like a dove. - Lk 3:21-22a

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
On Sunday, January 10, 2010, Holy Rosary Church is resuming its course
for Adult Faith Formation. The course, coordinated by Ron Maturani
(202-248.1735) and moderated by Father John Rossi, is held on Sunday
from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Rectory Conference Room. This is an
opportunity not to be missed.
Recent surveys indicate that the
United States is the most religious nation in the developed world.
Americans are also the most religiously ignorant people in the Western
world. For example, fewer than half of us can identify Genesis as the
first book of the Bible, and only one third know that Jesus delivered
the Sermon on the Mount.
America’s religious illiteracy is even
more dangerous than general cultural illiteracy, because religion is
the most volatile constituent of culture, and it has been, in addition
to one of the greatest forces for good in world history, one of the
greatest forces for evil. Given America’s role in the world, besides
Christianity, we should be acquainted with Judaism, Islam, Buddhism,
Confucianism and Hinduism. Nor should we forget the importance of
popular religiosity in handing on the faith from one generation to
another.
As Sylvia DeVillers pointed out, adult faith
formation takes many forms. In Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us: A
Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation (todaysparish.com/links011
10), the U.S. Catholic bishops say that there are three primary
goals of adult faith formation: 1. To invite and enable ongoing
conversion to Jesus in holiness of life; 2. To promote and support
active membership in the Christian community; 3. To call adults to
act as disciples in mission to the world.
It is interesting to
note that these goals parallel the intentions in the Rite of Christina
Initiation of Adults that those preparing for the sacraments of
initiation 1. be “freely converted to the Lord” 2. be given
“suitable pastoral formation and guidance aimed at training them in
the Christian life 3. be enable to “carry out the mission of the
entire people of God in the church and in the world”.
If we are
going to accomplish these goals, we have to find opportunities for
effective formation. There are formation opportunities all around us.
