SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
What Jesus did at the wedding in Cana was an extraordinary act of
grace. It is thoughtful of the bride and the groom and their families,
sparing them embarrassment. It is a blessing on the holy state of
marriage. It is a real acknowledgement of the thoughtfulness of Jesus’
mother, Mary. It is a sign to Jesus’ disciples that he has something
to teach them. And it teaches us about sharing our gifts, about
watching out for the needs of each other, and being thoughtful of each
other. It teaches us to honor marriage. It shows us that from the very
beginning of his public life Jesus was there for others. Now it is our
responsibility to follow in his mission.

"Everyone
serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an
inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this
as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his
glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. - Jn 2:10-11

IF YOU WANT TO CULTIVATE PEACE, PROTECT CREATION
In his message for World Peace Day, Jan. 1, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI
said that the degradation of the environment is a pressing moral
problem that threatens peace and human life itself. “We cannot remain
indifferent to what is happening around us, for the deterioration of
any part of the planet affects us all. …
Government policies,
the activity of multinational corporations and the day-to-day behavior
of individuals all have an impact on the environment.
While the
future of the world hangs in the balance because of what people are
doing today, the negative effects of pollution and environmental
exploitation already can be seen. … Can we remain indifferent before
the problems associated with such realities as climate change,
desertification, the deterioration and loss of productivity in most
agricultural areas, the pollution of rivers and aquifers, the loss of
biodiversity, the increase of natural catastrophes and the
deforestation of equatorial and tropical regions? …
Already the
world is seeing the growing phenomenon of ‘environmental refugees’,
people who are forced by the degradation of their natural habitat to
migrate in search of food, water and unpolluted air. It is becoming
more and more evident that the issue of environmental degradation
challenges us to examine our lifestyle and the prevailing models of
consumption and production, which are often unsustainable from a
social, environmental and even economic point of view.”
