FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

The readings this week make connections to both one another and to the liturgy. Saint Paul draws on Moses’ last words to the people when he says, “The Word is near you, and in your mouth and in your heart.” In the Gospel story, Jesus trades scripture quotes with the devil. Like Paul, Christ draws on Deuteronomy, and His 40 days in the desert echo Moses’ 40 days on Mt. Sinai and the 40 years the Israelites faced temptations in the desert. For his part, the devil quotes the very psalm from which we pray today. Each reading also highlights the three moments of liturgy: past, present, and future. Moses’ speech brings the past experience of salvation into a moment to celebrate now with sacrifice and thanksgiving. Paul invokes the Lord’s name “now” in relation to the Word that saves. And Jesus’ perseverance in the desert looks ahead to his ministry and ultimately to the fulfillment of that ministry in Jerusalem. The story of salvation is interwoven throughout scripture, and this Lent we can commit ourselves to weaving into our lives. This story is also present in this Eucharist to which we join ourselves.

The devil said to him, "All this will be yours, if you worship me." Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve." - Lk 4:6a, 7-8

ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL 2010
“I will give you thanks, O Lord”

The Archbishop’s Appeal is the life blood of our Archdiocese, whereby we are able to support and expand important ministries, programs and catechetical initiatives within our Church of Washington. The success of the Archbishop’s Appeal depends on each parish meeting its financial goal.

Our parish goal for the Archbishop’s Appeal for 2010 is $15,668. The members of our parish Appeal committee are: Gerry Oliveto (9:00 am Mass), Adriano Romano (10:30 am Mass), and Kathy Smith (12 noon Mass). In order to receive the proper credit for your contribution, the name of our parish is Holy Rosary Church and our parish number is 117.

Your gift to the Archbishop’s Appeal provides:
+ Immediate and direct care for people in need of shelter, medical treatment, mental health services, clothing, food and guidance about where to turn for the additional assistance they need;
+ Ministry to people who are living with developmental disabilities, homebound or in prison;
+ Comfort, consolation and the sacrament of the sick and dying;
+Direct support and tuition assistance to students who might not otherwise have an opportunity to receive a Catholic education;
+ Pro-life efforts so women can choose life for their unborn babies; and
+ Support and formation for our seminarians.

Your response is important because the needs are greater than ever. Together we will answer the Lord’s call to give thanks to God and to help others to do the same. Your donations to the Archbishop’s Appeal will manifest the love of Christ to our community and be a true cause of thanksgiving.

TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION is for Catholics in Central and Eastern Europe who need your help to continue to revitalize the church in 28 countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The collection funds vital pastoral and social projects and contributes to programs that promote Catholic life. Please be generous in today’s collection for the church in Central and Eastern Europe.

TODAY EVERYONE IS INVITED TO THE ANNUAL DAY OF RECOLLECTION: sponsored by the Sodality in conjunction with the Holy Name Society and Padre Pio Prayer Group. It will begin with a noon Mass, followed by a light lunch ($5. offering) and then a conference given by Rev. John Rossi. The day will conclude with a rosary and benediction in church at 3 PM.

OUR LENTEN PARISH MISSION preached by Rev. Francis Russo, from St. Francis College, will take place on February 22-26 during the 12:05 Mass. Plan NOW to be there each day. Your life will be renewed in Christ, in faith, in the Liturgy, and in the Word of God.

“THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU” is an archdiocesan initiative to invite all Catholics to avail themselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is as wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. Confessions will be held every Wednesday at Holy Rosary Church during Lent, 6:30-8:00 PM.

THE ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL 2010 HAS BEGUN! This week you are asked to review the Archbishop’s Appeal brochure and the tabloid that you will receive with your bulletin today. The Archbishop’s Appeal campaign is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift, payable over ten months. A significant gift to the Archbishop’s Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. As you review the work enabled by your contribution, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. Each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend and the following weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

L’APPELLO DELL’ARCIVESCOVO PER IL 2010 è incominciato.
