THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The episode of Jesus reading in the synagogue of
Nazareth tells us that he was a faithful Jew, attending Sabbath
services and taking his turn reading. We also see him as a teacher;
because he goes on to interpret the words of scripture. Isaiah speaks
of the anointing of the prophet. Jesus applies these words to himself
to say he is the anointed, the Messiah, who has come to begin a new
era of freedom and the restoration of grace. Jesus is just beginning
his ministry, and so proclaims his gospel and the start of a mission
that while it will experience rejection, suffering and death, will end
in eternal glory.

"He
has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the
blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable
to the Lord." Jesus said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is
fulfilled in your hearing." - Lk 4:18b-19

A CONSISTENT ETHIC OF LIFE
Last Friday, January 22, 2010, was the 37th anniversary of the U.S.
Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade that legalized abortion in this
country. The best way to overturn that sad decision and proclaim the
Gospel of Life, according to the late bishop of Chicago, Cardinal
Joseph Bernardin, is to adopt a consistent ethic of life.
Nuclear war, abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia, child abuse and
any form of slavery are impending threats to life. A consistent
ethical life calls for positive legal action to prevent the killing of
the unborn and to promote human dignity through programs for
nutrition, health care and housing. Each one of us is called to give
his contribution.
A consistent ethical life works to defend the
integrity of moral principles which prohibit attacks on unborn life,
direct attacks on civilians in war actions, and intentional killing of
patients in nursing homes. In an ethical life we must examine each
case individually and apply moral principles accordingly. Catholics
must express their commitment to moral principles in their everyday
life, and politicians must make political choices with moral
principles in mind. This is true for all public issues, from abortion
to arms racing, from social programs to foreign policies.
The
Church legitimately fulfills a public role by articulating a framework
for political choices, by relating such a framework to specific
issues, and by calling for a systematic moral analysis in all areas of
public policies. A clear witness to a consistent ethic of life will
provide us with the moral basis to grasp opportunities to serve both
the sacredness of every human life and the God of Life who is the
origin and the support of our common humanity.

HAITI DISASTER
RECOVERY: After the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, all
parishes of the Archdiocese have been asked to support relief efforts.
Our parish is responding also. The Missionaries of St. Charles (Scalabrinians)
have a seminary, a school and a medical clinic in Port-au-Prince. The
Scalabrinians already pledged $20,000 to assist the families of the
students. All funds collected in our parish are directly and in their
entirety sent to the Scalabrinian missionaries in Haiti. Please,
address your check to “Haiti Relief Fund” and drop it in the regular
collection basket. Haiti Disaster Recovery offertory envelopes are
available in the back of the Church. Thank you!
