SS.

THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
Today’s solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ celebrates the present of his presence among us in the Eucharist. It celebrates “present” in two senses. First, as gift. The Eucharist is Christ’s gift of self, his self-giving in his Body and Blood that we share, and in divine grace as we honor him in the Blessed Sacrament through our prayer and adoration. The second sense of “present” is “now.” Christ is with us now just as really and truly as he was with the hungry people who shared the multiplied loaves and fishes. The presence of Christ is a real Body-and-Blood presence, but a sacramental presence. It is his way of being-with-us, a personal presence that leads to our adoration.

Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets. - Lk 9:16-17

SUNDAY MASS, CENTER OF CHRISTIAN LIFE

We “need to give priority in pastoral programs to appreciation of the importance of Sunday Mass. We must motivate Christians to take an active part in it. And if possible, to bring their families, which is even better.

The participation of parents with their children at Sunday Mass is an effective way of teaching the faith, and it is a close bond that maintains their unity with one another. Sunday, throughout the church’s life, has been the privileged moment of the community’s encounter with the risen Lord.

Christians should be aware that they are not following a character from past history but the living Christ, present in the today and the now of their lives. He is the living one who walks alongside us, revealing to us the meaning of events, of suffering and death, of rejoicing and feasting, entering our homes and remaining there, feeding us with the bread that gives life. For this reason Sunday Mass must be the center of Christian life.

The encounter with Christ in the Eucharist calls forth a commitment to evangelization and an impulse toward solidarity; it awakens in the Christian a strong desire to proclaim the Gospel and to bear witness to it in the world so as to build a more just and humane society.

From the Eucharist in the course of the centuries an immense wealth of charity has sprung forth of sharing in the difficulties of others, of love and of justice.”

(Pope Benedict XVI, Address to CELAM)

THE CATHOLIC STANDARD, HOLY ROSARY CHURCH, AND YOU!

The amount our parish of Holy Rosary assessment for the fiscal year that starts July 1 for the weekly Catholic newspaper Catholic Standard, is $2,571.50. The Catholic Standard is the first and best provider of Catholic news and information. But as of now only 12 parishioners are paid subscribers out of over 300 registered families! The above parish-plan assessment is Archbishop Wuerl’s plan to help fund this portion of the Archdiocese’s communications ministry. Having more paying subscribers would help lower our parish assessment. When YOU subscribe, that assessment amount is decreased by $18.50! Just think of all the wonderful projects and programs we could use that savings to support! Please consider becoming a Catholic Standard subscriber (Regular $35; Seniors $25) and call our parish office for your subscription as soon as possible. Thank you for your support!

2007 ARCHBISOP’S APPEAL TELEPHONE FOLLOW-UP

Each year, the Archbishop’s Appeal conducts a telephone follow-up to past donors that have not renewed in the current year. Beginning on June 11, representatives of the Appeal will be contacting past donors by telephone. If you receive a call, please consider making a generous gift to this important campaign. Thank you again to all of those who have made a pledge and are still making payments as well as to those who have completed their gifts. Your funds are critical to the Archdiocesan offices, ministries and services that receive support from this campaign.
